Lt. John L. Walker

Lt. John L. Walker served long, well, and with great valor, laboring with his aging generation well into the new century. He was the son of Issac West Walker and Sylvia Smith. He married Carolyn King and had one daughter Mattie who was born in 1862. His family and descendants well remember him. My thanks to Allison Hart Key who furnished the photos of Lt. Walker as a young soldier and an old man, as well as, the other photos of his personal belongings, including his copy of Hardee’s Tactics, his pistol, his canteen, and his coin bracelet. It is on the service of men like Lt. Walker that our nation was defined and built. For his life, his service, and his love we owe him a great debt of gratitude.

My thanks to Kelly and Susan for all they have done in finding the ghosts of long lost men, including Lt. Walker.

Unwinding the Combined Service Records of two men with the same name in the Sixteenth South Carolina
Thanks to Susan, who gathered the information shown here

What follows are the card entries made in the Combined Service Records under the name of John Walker, 16th South Carolina. There were two of them. John L. Walker who served in Company F and probably Company E. He was with the unit when it surrendered in Greensboro and was wounded at least once in the Atlanta Campaign. The other John Walker, who maybe John H. or John A. Walker was probably captured around Egypt, Mississippi. It is possible he was there with the unit in 1863 or that he was sent to the hospital during the Atlanta Campaign. Was he from Kentucky? Did he serve with Wheat's Battalion? It seems doubtful, but the questions linger. What became of him following the war? John L. did return to Greenville and the picture was taken at a reunion held around World War I. What is certain is that it is a story worthy of Wheat's boys and the Sixteenth!
