However, I still have a few remaining questions. As I understand the situation, Dr. Jost did turn down an offer of a "teacher in practicum" position (B.S. level) in Sept., 1994, but several court rulings, the latest in March of 1995, directed that he be restored as a University Professor, not at the lower- level position. The issue of Dr. Jost's requests for replacement of the Dean appears not necessarily to be connected to the issue of Dr.Jost's job. As he explained it to me, there is a four-year limit to a Dean's legal term, and the current Dean is now approaching 8 years in the post. Obviously, it is none of my business whether the Dean is retained or not; the point is that as far as I know, Dr. Jost has not made removal of the Dean a condition of returning to his own professorship. If Dr. Jost has had "difficulty in achieving full and fruitful cooperation" with some colleagues at his University, this certainly is not a general phenomenon. He is known in international circles as an excellent cooperator. That is why I have joined other international crop scientists in urging you to help him regain his professorship. I hope you will reconsider his case. If I am mistaken about any of these issues, I would appreciate it very much if you can provide further information. Thank you once again for your time and attention. Sincerely, Thomas S. Cox Research Geneticist and Professor |
