Poetry

My favorite poem is O Captain! My Captain! Walt Witman's elegy to the assassinated Abraham Lincoln.

Abby sent me her favorite poem by T.S. Eliot entitled: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Although its kinda long for the average attention span of most Americans, its good.

O me! O life! Walt Whitman does it again, answering why life amongst so much sadness, despair, and waste; he powerfully answers so that "you may contribute a verse."

To the Virgins, Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick is partially used in Dead Poets Soceity, "gather ye rosebuds." I think its a good poem inspiring you to carpe diem.

The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It is a vivid telling of extraordinary discipline, courage, & sacrifice held by soldiers.

A great poem about someone you love is The Lovable Child by Emilie Poulsson.

Another poem about beauty is Beautiul from McGuffey's Second Reader.

J. Corashin Wishele captures the essence of love and devotion in That perfect Girl for me.

A sad cry of emptiness and love lost in With another.

All children, expecially little gentlemen should know The Little Gentleman by unknown.

Few people have heard of The American's Creed by William Tyler Page, but it is an accurate description of an American's duty and beliefs.

A Smile by unknwon is a short, optimistic, and useful poem for those who have just suffered defeat.

Great Men by Ralph Waldo Emerson shows that men who remain steadfast to duty make this nation great.

New Friends and Old Friends by an unknown poet tells that you should cherish the friends you have.

Edgar Allen Poe

Poe is one of my favorite overall poets. I have compiled two brief background biographies about Poe. Below are some of my favorite poems of his.

Perhaps Poe's best and most famous work is The Raven. Its rhyme and other literary devices make it a masterful expression of language.

Annabel Lee is a sad and well rhymed love poem.

Lindsey pointed out The Lake: To --- to me, and I really like it. Once again, Poe's words flow rapidly out of your mouth with purpose.

The impossible quest of a gallant knight is described in Eldorado.

In To Helen, Poe writes a dedication to Helen of Troy with a varied vocabulary.

George S. Patton's speech to Thrid Army , immortalized by George C. Scott in the opening scene of the movie Patton, closely parallels Henry V's inspiring oratory.
