OTTAWA (CP) One of the remaining gaps in Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau's peace crusade--caught up in a political struggle, sources say--is the appointment of am ambassador for disarmament.
Former B.C. premier Dave Barrett and former Progressive Conservative party leader Robert Stanfield were considered for the job, but are no longer on a "short list" of prospects at external affairs. Senior government officials say the post is expected to be filled soon, within days or weeks at the most.
Barrett, the former NDP premier, was an early favored candidate both for his acumen and his political savvy in Western Canada where Liberal party organizers want to bolster their image. Stanfield was courted for his acknowledged diplomatic skills.
Barrett, reached today in Vancouver, said he had no comment. Stanfield could not be reached for comment because he was travelling.
Officials who requested anonymity said the government seems to be leaning toward nominating a career civil servant to the job.
