BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

Colonel W. Norman Hoye C.D. RACF [Royal Canadian Air Force] (Ret.)

Col. Hoye was born in Saskatchewan in 1916 and educated in Vancouver where he presently resides at 2766 West First Ave. He has three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He enlisted in #11 Sqdn RACF (Aux.) in 1934 and transferred to the Permanent Force in 1935. In 1942 he was commissioned in the Aeronautical Engineering Branch and served on bases, at Commands, and at National Defence Headquarters until retirement in 1970.

During WWII he was British Commonwealth Air Training bases, at Eastern Air Command in Halifax, N.S., and in #6 (Canadian) Bomber Group in the U.K. Additional experience in Europe (and NATO) was gained as a member of the Planning Group in Paris in 1952 and Air Division HQ in Metz when the Canadian Squadrons were moved to bases in France and Germany in 1953 and 1954.

At RCAF Station Cold Lake he was responsible for all technical services on the base and at Primrose Lake weapons range during the early base construction and the operation of sophisticated jet aircraft in extremely cold weather.

As Director of Aircraft Maintenance Policy, Canadian Forces Headquarters, he developed the concepts and procedures which became the standard for all the Canadian Armed Forces.

His final position in the Air Force was Senior Technical Staff Officer at Air Division Headquarters, Lahr, West Germany. As STSO (from 1966 to 1969) he was responsible for all technical and logistic support of the four bases and twelve CF104 Squadrons, including the nuclear weapons of the "Strike" role. Duties included a senior command position in NATO exercises which simulated nuclear war,* and representing Canada in NATO activities such as the tri-national body which supervised the budget and infrastructure of the weapons base on Sardinia.

After retiring he returned to Vancouver and was the Western Representative of the Air Line Pilots Association from 1971 to 1984. As the Association representative for B.C. and Alberta he managed the local office, and assisted the pilots of the major airlines in many special committees and in contract negotiations and administration.

He has been the President of the Lower Mainland Branch of VANA for five years and a Director of Defence Research and Education Center and Veterans Against Nuclear Arms (National).
