"...as i may have mentioned this in the 1978 statement, i am right now establishing contact with the three groups of popular musicians providing aid for the starving Africans because what the Americans and i actually requested that Mr. Trudeau provide for me, since 1978, was financial support to coordinate what they are now doing--which many of those i was in touch with in 1978 and since were willing to contribute (as the records will substantiate)--with what i am now attempting to 'persuade' the governments (as you see, with some apparent success) and such interest groups as the C.L.C. to contribute towards a longer-term solution to these problems.
Many of them, sir, have already made significant contributions in response to such
'concerns.' Some have donated from their own pockets to UNICEF, to help the poor and
disadvantaged in Kampuchea, to work for peace, and other charitable 'concerns' which will
help the underprivileged in North America.
Charity and human concern cannot be equivalent to 'one night stands,' as we understood and
said in 1978. Dilettantes do not supply what 'the human family' genuinely needs.
We must maintain the commitment, sir.
Every second that passes without our 'concerns' being applied to resolve the human misery
and deprivation risks or costs 'us' more human lives. As Ken Kragen, the organizer of the
'U.S.A. for Africa' group, said on the 'American Video Awards Show', upon being given their
first humanitarian award, 'Winston Churchill said, "The price of greatness is responsibility."'
Having great respect and admiration for the commitment by the popular musicians, their
friends and supporters, i will close here, sir, by repeating what i actually suggested in
my January 6, 1982 recommendations to President Carter in regards to their involvement
since 1977 and 1978. I recommended:
'Further to the commitment to a just peace and a recognition of the dignity and needs of all human beings, i recommend that all previously involved (and contacted) persons and parties and all others who are willing to aid us in achieving our goal, be asked to express their human concern for the issues that no just political distinction or ideology restricts or forbids--by donating their time as a part of a whole, united aspiration to express and seek a worldwide commitment for the betterment of our children, the underprivileged, the disabled, the hungry, and the conditions of society which deserve our humane and compassionate concern.*
*-As i have quoted from the Old Testament and the Qur'an in these recommendations to cite the basis of the wisdom from whence they were derived, i wish to quote from the New Testament; the holy scriptures of the Christians. From St. Mark, Chapter 12, verses 28 through 34, i quote:
'And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
And Jesus answered him, THE FIRST COMMANDMENT OF ALL IS, HEAR, O ISRAEL; THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD:
AND THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY MIND, AND WITH ALL THY STRENGTH: THIS IS THE FIRST COMMANDMENT.
AND THE SECOND IS LIKE, NAMELY THIS, THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF, THERE IS NONE OTHER COMMANDMENT GREATER THAN THESE.
And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, THOU ART NOT FAR FROM THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
And no man after that durst ask him any question.'"
