REAL POLICY OUTLINE
MAIN POLICY
REAL stands for Resource Equality And Liberty. Our main policy planks are the Natural Dividend and Resource Taxes.

RESOURCE EQUALITY
The REAL Party believes that every individual has the same right as everyone else to a share of the value of the gifts of nature. Resource Taxes will extract the natural resource value from those who have titles to natural resources such as land, fisheries, water and pollution rights. The Natural Dividend will distribute that value equally to everyone. This is what we mean by Resource Equality.

LIBERTY
The REAL Party believes that human rights should be assumed to be the maximum positive rights that can be exercised without compromising the principle of equality. We believe these rights should be assumed to be independent of and prior to the State. Individuals have these rights as long as they recognise the corresponding rights of all others including other species and future generations. The States role is to ensure that no individuals or species are being denied their rights. The State should not interfere with any activities which do not impinge on the rights of others. Every individual should have the freedom to decide for themselves how to exercise their rights. This is what we mean by Liberty. The Natural Dividend gives individuals the freedom to decide for themselves how to use the value of the natural resources to which they are entitled.

IF AND ONLY IF POLICY
The REAL symbol stands for 'if and only if''.

REAL Logo

The REAL Party believes that central decision-making by government institutions is always very costly and unresponsive to the diversity of values in a community. Decisions are better made by individuals in a free competitive market IF all participants value the currency equally. Money is subject to diminishing marginal utility like any other 'good'. That means that the more you have of it the less you value it. The rich make things cost more than the poor are prepared to pay for them. A market system is ONLY acceptable IF people have equal access to money. The REAL Party believes that the ability of a small section of society to monopolise the value of natural resources is the major cause of unequal access to money in the present system. Another cause may be differences in human ability but in our present system this may be magnified by environmental differences such as differences in nutrition and education. Individuals cannot yet control who they pass their natural abilities on to so any difference in access to money from this cause is not compounded by inheritance.

IF AND ONLY IF the Natural Dividend significantly reduces inequality, a REAL government would return decision-making to the people by discontinuing government services.

TRANSITIONAL POLICY
The purpose of transitional policy is to raise and maintain the living standards of the under-priveleged until they are fully in control of their own resources and no longer need this assistance. Details of this policy are subject to consultation and adaptation to achieve this purpose as quickly as possible with the minimum further disruption of peoples lives and, of course, as cheaply as possible.
