We have no use for Gray Davis or his policies. We oppose the recall because it is a flawed and undemocratic process in its present form. See below for more.
This "Information Ban" initiative is a poorly-concealed attempt to overturn civil rights laws by making it impossible to gather statistics on race or ethnicity. It would endanger public health, make our schools less responsive to children's needs, and cover up job and housing discrimination. See Page 2 for more.
Union activist CT Weber is the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for governor. He stands for peace, justice, equality and defense of working-class families against the bi-partisan attack on our rights and needs. See Page 3 for more.
Proposition 53 is part of a bi-partisan deal to pass a California budget. It would lock
a series of pork barrel projects into the state budget forever, at the expense of housing,
education and health care. See Page 4 for more.
On October 7, California voters will be asked whether to remove Governor Gray Davis from
office. The Peace and Freedom Party recommends a "NO" vote on the recall.
We don't support Gray Davis or his policies. In many ways, he is a perfect symbol of
what's wrong with the Democratic and Republican parties. He shamelessly focuses on
raising money, waffles on issues, and places corporate greed above human needs. His
barbaric attitude toward prisoners is disgusting.
The problem is, you can't change a system by attacking symbols. All the business party
candidates to replace Davis share his vices, and some are worse. California's present
ills are deeply rooted in our economic and political system. They'll be here after this
election, no matter who the governor is.
Moreover, the California recall process is flawed and undemocratic. The Peace and
Freedom Party supports recall of public officials as a democratic right. We look
forward to a society in which, as our platform puts it:
"... all officials are elected, recallable at any time, and none receives more than
a worker's wage."
That is, a new election by popular demand. The present recall process isn't designed to
expand democracy, but to weed out crooks. Instead of the governor having to stand in a
new election, we first vote "yes" or "no" on tossing him out, then vote in a
winner-take-all free-for-all in which he can't be a candidate. This means that Davis
could get 49.9% of the vote on the first part of the ballot and be replaced by a
candidate who gets 5% of the vote on the second part.
We urge a "NO" vote on the recall, and a vote for CT Weber, the Peace and Freedom Party
candidate, on the replacement section of the ballot. That way you will be rejecting
this process, but casting your vote for real democracy in the future.
Why vote against the recall?
You can register to vote if you are a U.S. citizen, live in California, will be 18 years old by October 7, and are not in prison or on parole for a felony. Registration forms are available at firehouses, libraries, DMV offices and registrars of voters.
You can go to www.peaceandfreeom.org to obtain a form you can download and mail in. If you are given an old form which doesn't have the Peace and Freedom Party on it, why not check "Other" and write in "Peace & Freedom"?
Accompanying this article is an uncredited cartoon. Across the top of it is a banner with text "The U.S. is a Democracy. It's Your Choice! VOTE!". Below that on the left is a picture of a young person lying on the ground with a large screw in her back labeled "Phillips". On the right is a picture of an older person lying on the groung with a large screw in his back labeled "Standard", and in between is a bubble with the instruction "choose one". Across the bottom is the text, "if you don't vote, one of the above will be chosen for you".
