NO ON PROPOSITION 54

Don’t hide problems under the rug!

Proposition 54 tries to make problems of inequality go away by pretending they don’t exist. We all know that they do exist. It would outlaw collecting statistical information on race and ethnicity in connection with housing, health care, education and employment. Thus, no one could prove that there were any gaps or discrimination among races or ethnic groups.

Health Care

Prop 54 endangers all of us by making it more difficult to track and understand diseases. Doctors and public health officials need to know which groups are most affected by different health conditions and different cures. The Information Ban Initiative would deprive the medical community of this knowledge. The "medical research" exemption covers only a small part of the information needed to track and fight disease.

Education

To provide quality education for all, we need to know where the schools are succeeding and where they are failing, and why. Teachers need to know the specific problems of different ethnic groups so they can work on solutions. The Information Ban Initiative undermines school accountability and educational progress.

Racial Profiling

Prop 54 would make it impossible to track racial profiling by police officers, because no statistics would exist.

Housing and Job Discrimination

What discrimination? No figures, no problem, says Prop 54 sponsor Ward Connerly.

Hate Crimes

Prop 54 would make it illegal to track hate crimes based on race or ethnicity.
