Candle Light Vigil for Roisin
Members of the Greater Pittsburgh Irish Northern Aid Unit were
joined by other concerned Irish Americans from the Pittsburgh area in a
candlelight vigil and demonstration protesting the wrongful incarceration
of Roisin McAliskey and her infant daughter Loinnir. Roisin was arrested
and held in a British prison from November 1996 until March 1998.
Participants in the Roisin McAliskey candlelight vigil and
protest marched to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Building in
downtown Pittsburgh. This local newspaper was presented with a petition
requesting for not only more coverage of the events in Northern Ireland and
Ireland, but an unbiased report of those events.
1998 Bloody Sunday Commemoration
Members of the Greater Pittsburgh Irish Northern Aid Unit listen
solemnly as the events of Bloody Sunday (January 30, 1972) are described.
British Soldiers opened fire on a crowd of unarmed civilians, marching in a
peaceful civil rights protest. The crosses are labeled with the names and
ages of each of the 13 individuals who lost their lives at the hands of
British Soldiers on that fateful day.
