The whole country seems to be chatting these days. With the internet fever gripping the young generation, the term 'chat' has become a household commodity with every person who has an access to computer. The most amazing fact is the time that is usually spent on chat-ranging from two to ten hours at a stretch-just goes on to show the persistency in our youth! chat2i.jpg (39739 bytes)While studying for a few hours at a stretch can cause immense mental fatigue and agony to our youth, a whole night spent on chat is considered to be constructive and educational. Some of the ignorant parents go to the extent of believing that their child is working on the computer. 'Baita kuch dair aram bhi kar liya karo' says the considerate mother. 'Maan mujhe azeem insan banna hai-abhi bauhat kaam para hai', replies our computer bug. And on he goes with his search for potential girlfriend.
The sort of conversation done on the chat zone varies from person to person, but one thing strikes out obviously is the serous paucity of girls. While you will find plenty of weird nick like 'Aamir Khan', 'Cute guy', 'Lahori munda' and Deewana', the number of 'Madhuris' and 'friendly girls' is decreasing day be day. And then again the supply-demand rule comes into action. Log in with some feminine name and you will receive hundreds of invitations to chat. Men usually do not enjoy this privilege. This, often forces men to assume the role of girls who feel flattered over the fact that they are fooling hundreds of their male counterparts at the same time. Truth, in this country, is a rare commodity on chatzone. Every boy describes himself as a charming prince with a Stallone-like physique while every girl on the net is like Aishwarya Rai.
There are usually two types of candidates out on the hunt for opposite sex - the international experts and the local hunters. The international experts are usually high fliers who feel pride in spreading the message of obscenity and making a fool out to the people at the global level. They believe that Pakistani girls are narrow-minded and conservative and o not open up, while for the goris, talking about something as 'cool' as sex is no issue at all. And then of course, we as a nation feel brilliant about making fool out of gora. I for one know a couple of people who always introduce themselves as rich Italian business executives. If the gullible girl at the other end asks some pointed questions about the country and the language, our young friend would tell her without any hesitation that Gujrat is the most romantic city in Italy and that in Italian language 'Doo ho Kay mar' means 'I love you'. On the other hand the local hunters log themselves in Pakistan channel and look out for long term relationships. They face a tough competition in terms of scarcity of females, but if a poor girl, somehow shows her willingness to introduce herself, our hero would come straight to the point, "When can we meet?" Even surprising is the fact that apparently some very strong relationships are formed on the basis of few hours of chat on the internet. I was absolutely shocked to hear that someone I know was getting married to a girl whom he met on the internet and even kissed on the very first conversation. My obvious concern was 'how can one kiss though a computer screen?' However, I was told that people can do even bigger things, though only with words. Here again, lies are to be found in abundant quantities- every second person is either a big wadera or a top-notch business executive. At times one wonders how these business executives from big multinationals have so much tom e to waste on chatting.
Taking an impartial view of the whole scenario, it would be unfair to lay all the blame on our youth who don not have any positive means of releasing their energies. Chatting is an entertainment to them and they take it in the same spirit-just a chance to say a few dirty words to their opposite sex. To them this is worthwhile experience since they have never had it before and in the present scenario, don't hope for such a chance even in the distant future. As result, they can fall to any limits, just to have that feeling of adventure, no matter what the price might be.
Concluding on a Serious not, it is literally shocking to see 14 year of kids to talking about drugs and sex on the internet. It is indeed shocking to see the lever of indecency in the language used while chatting, regardless of age or sex. But perhaps the most shocking aspect of the whole picture is our image as nation- the brush to paint our national image and repute is given in the hands of young motley crowd or non-serious people to whom sex is the only wonder of the world. These people add to the bias against the Pakistanis internationally and go all the way to convince them that Pakistanis are a nation of corrupt, deprived and immature people who don't even know hoe t carry themselves. This is not to say that people form other countries are all angels, but we as Pakistanis cannot come out of our typical mentality ever for a while. Or maybe we are so irresponsible that we don't not feel the importance of the fact that we are representing the culture of our country to all the people in the world. We certainly don't need to invite a gora to tell us all these things.
