Aircraft of the Viet Nam War
Have you ever wondered what your government does with its old warriors? Here's a picture which could be a plane, ship or, sadly, a human warrior.
Navy P-3 Orion
Sorry, Charlie! I don't know if this F-4 Phantom shot down this particular MiG, but it seemed fitting to have them next to each other.
The A1D Skyraider. Better known as "Sandy". This incredible aircraft could lift its own weight in weapons and remain on station for extended periods, giving downed aircrew a fighting chance at being rescued.
(Above)The F8U Crusader. Considered by many to be the equal or the better of the F4G Phantom in a dogfight, this Navy fighter saw plenty of action 'Downtown'.
(Left) The A4. Known as 'the scooter' this durable little aircraft carried its share of bombs 'downtown'.
The A-7 Corsair II
The WV-2 or Willie Victor, known to aviators as 'Red Crown'. This was the airborne radar picket version of the Constellation.
The F-105 Thunderchief, better known as "Thud"
The B-52 Stratofortress. The oldest aircraft still mission capable and flying today. Three generations of bombers pilots have flown the "Buff."
The O-1G. Flown by some of the bravest pilots in Viet Nam, this is a Piper Cub with hardpoints on the wings. It was used by Forward Air Controllers, or FACs to pinpoint enemy troops for fighters and attack aircraft.
The O-2. A Cessna Skylane used later by the FACs.
The OV-10 Bronco. Used late in the Viet Nam War by FACs, it also had a small offensive capability. It had incredible maneuverability and several hardpoints on the wings.
