Some prisoners are getting a voice on to the internet, but that may be because they are held in the US! Kevin Art, of the H Block 3 is now on
McNamee's is now at Maze Prison. Danny McNamee is an innocent man being held by the British. McNamee was never a member of the IRA but he joined IRA prisoners in trying to escape the Whitemoor prison where solitary confinement has been used. Please see the official website in the box above for more about the case.
The Birmingham Six and the Guilford Four are also examples of how trials go for Irish people in Britain. Click the Hayden graphic to see how Ireland treats political prisoners.
In spite of British policy that Prisoners should be allowed to serve their sentences near their homes and families, Irish Political Prisoners continues to be denied transfers from England to the north of Ireland.
More than seven months into the ceasefires and the British are not showing one ounce of good faith towards Irish Political Prisoners in England and their families.
Prisoners' families continue to be harassed under the now renewed Prevention of Terrorism Act, fear, isolation, and debt are the reality of travelling to England. Prisoners are repeatedly 'ghosted' in spite of visits being pre-booked. Children see their imprisoned parent at intervals of up to two years. Visits in Irish are terminated. Closed visits, with glass panels between prisoner and visitor, have been re-introduced. Elderly and infirm relatives are unable to travel.
Almost a third of Irish Political Prisoners are being held in solitary confinement. Prison conditions in England have deteriorated dramatically to the point where the health of Prisoners and relatives is severely affected.
The British are not even implementing their own staged policy regarding transfers and are deliberately creating the worst prison conditions in England since the 1970's. Families of Irish Political Prisoners in England see absolutely no evidence of goodwill on the part of the British Administration.
We demand the immediate, permanent transfer of all Irish Political Prisoners from English to north of Ireland jails and an end of the vindictive treatment of Irish Political Prisoners in England
The above information came from the Committee for the Transfer of Irish Prisoners. At this time, the only prisoner to be release from a British prison, occurred on his own terms and escaped. The conditions of the Maze Prison (Long Kesh) is far better where prisoners have achieved political status. The women POWS at Maghaberry are mixed with criminal convicts, and are locked in their cells for at least two hours a day. The Republic of Ireland has released serveral Irish political prisoners since the cease-fire. For more information on Irish political prisoners, go here. --webmaster
