Richard 11, Mark 9, and eight-year-old Jason died in a Loyalist arson fire. The brothers were raised as Protestants and attended a Protestant school. Their mother is a Catholic.

From the time of the first cease-fire, all during the talks, all the way up to the vote, 18 Catholics were killed by loyalist death squads; they are Michael McGoldrick, Sean Brown, Robert Hamill, John Slane, Bernadette Martin, James Morgan, Gerry Devlin, Seamus Dillon, Eddie Trainor, Terry "Junior" Enwright, Fergal McCusker, Larry Brennan, Ben Hughes, Liam Conway, John McColgan, Damien Trainor, Adrian Lanff and Ciaran Heffron. Protestant Glen Greer was killed by Loyalists for being an "informer". Dermot McShane, Catholic, was run over and killed by the British Army during a riot.
