In this section i have included some information about Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and also of my own experience in martial arts.
I have always been interested in martial arts, but i had never really got in to it till i started university 2 years ago.
But at the age of 8, i enrolled in a Jui Jitsu club, and i remember being fascinated by the kind of movies and attacks that can be accomplished with
Jui Jitsu. But i really did'nt last long in the club because i needed something that was faster, something that did'nt require 7 different moves
before you actually did something. I needed something that did'nt limit me to fixed positions, and monotonous movements. Like Bruce Lee said in one of
his interviews, "Karate is like an iron bar, which is rigid, and when you hit it makes a 'WACK' sound. Where as Gung Fu is more loose, it is like an iron ball
attached to a chain, which when you strike makes a 'WONG' sound." Thus, after 2 months in the club i immediatly left, and it was'nt till about 10 years later that
i started doing martial arts again.
When i entered university, i met alot of people, one of whom is now a very good friend of mine. His name is Gavin, and he is an expert in the field of martial arts. Not only
is he the fastest person i have ever met, he is also and increadible martial artist, strong, fast and knows countless styles. His main field of martial arts, was Jui Jitsu, in which he is a black belt, but he then
turned to Thai Boxing, and he even came second in the world championships, about 5 years ago. Since i met him he began to teach me Thai boxing, and we then followed on to developing our skills
towards Jeet Kune Do and some basic moves of Kung Fu, which we are constantly trying to improve.
Since i began to train with Gavin, i became very aware of what kind things i could do with some basic trainning, i then started to read all of Bruce Lee's books and since then i have been combining my Thai Boxing/Jui Jitsu
skills with the Jeet Kune Do technique, and it has been extremly rewarding. I have become more aware of my limitations, become faster, stronger and more precise in my punchs. I dont actually have belts
or anything, but thats just basically because as Bruce Lee, i think that "Belts are just used to hold up your trouses, or for teaching perporses." But according to my sensai, if i had a belt, righ now, currently
from what i know mentaly and physically, i would be a Brown belt, one under Black.
The following are some main points that are involved in Jeet Kune Do and also in Kung Fu, which is what Bruce Lee started doing. But i wont say much about Jeet Kune Do, as it is better for you to buy Bruce Lee's book,
The Tao of Jeet Kune Do, in which you will be able to find all of the issues involved in this technique, plus all of his original ideas and drawings.
The first thing that you must understand about Jeet Kune Do, is that it really is'nt a fighting style as such, it is really more of a technique which you can apply to any other martial art that you know.
Obviously if you dont know any other martial arts you can learn Jeet Kune Do as a martial art as there are many techniques involving different grapling movments, kicks, punches, etc.
Unlike in Karate, Bruce Lee did not think that blocking a punch with your forearm, acting as a solid bar was a good idea. He believed that it was better if you could intercept the punch, or kick. Thus the meaning of JKD, 'The way of the intercepting
fist or leg'. Therefore in JKD when somebody punches you, you have to imagine your self that you are part of your opponents movement, you have move with him at the same time that he attacks, so that both your
movement and his, become one, kind of like the rotating Ying and Yang symbols i have above. Thus when the person attacks you, you use this opportunity, this momenteraly openning that your opponent leaves as he punches you. So basically you have
to attack at the same time that he attacks you (Fig.1 shows such a movment). But you must always remember to stay very calm and very flexible, never frigid, and never telegraph your movements.
