February 28, 1999 - In the Championship
Game of the Bullis Middle School Tournament, the Potomac 7th grade basketball team beat St
Albans 46-33 to win the Independent Private School Title.
Both St Albans and Potomac expected to get to the championship game when the tournament
started. St Albans marched through the regular season and the first rounds of the
tournament undefeated, crushing virtually every opponent in their path. One
exception to the rule came on February 10th when Potomac visited St Albans during the
regular season and gave the Bulldogs all they could handle. St Albans eventually
prevailed 45-42, but they were tested right down to the last seconds. Potomac
only lost one other game during the regular season, also by 3 points to St Anselm's.
Potomac looked at the championship game as a chance to even the score with St Albans.
The stands were packed, and you could feel the electricity in the air. Potomac
didn't waste any time, taking the opening tip down the floor for a score. On
defense, Potomac used the speed of Pete |

Dalla, Jason Aqui, and Drew Peterson to
put constant pressure on St Alban's ball handlers, a key to Potomac's success. The
Panthers were also able to handle the Bulldog's full court press which most teams fall
victim to. Potomac was patient during the first quarter and took advantage of their
opportunities. The Panthers led 9-4 late in the quarter when St Albans hit a 3
pointer to close the margin to 2 points 9-7 at the end of the first period.
In the second quarter, Potomac was able to get St Albans' big men in foul trouble by
challenging them inside. Two of the Bulldog's best low post players each where blown
for their third foul and were taken out of the game. The Panthers took advantage,
increasing their lead to double digits for the first time in the game. St Alban's
again hit a couple of key 3 pointers to keep the game in range. At the half,
Potomac led by 10 points 25-15.
In the third quarter, St Albans big men returned, but Potomac kept going to the basket on
all cylinders increasing their lead to 15 points. In the fourth quarter, the
Panthers slowed the pace down to |

work some time off the clock.
For every Bulldog surge, the Panthers answered. Pete Dalla also took a few
opportunities away from St Albans late in the game with some great steals in the back
court. The Panthers went on to win by a final margin of 13 points.
Potomac had two players score in double figures with Brent Locey leading the way with 17
points followed by Michael Fischer with 13. Chris McNerney added 9 points.
Brent Locey was named to the All-Tournament Team, and Michael Fischer was selected MVP of
the tournament. Potomac finished the season with an overall record of 13-2.
Congratulations Panthers on a Great season.
