As a picture can say a thousand words so can a staff. What you see above you can learn so much from as a beginner.
The lines and spaces that you see is called a Staff.
The top staff is the treble staff because of the Treble Clef shown on the left side of the staff. The Treble Clef is also known as the G Clef because it ends on the line of G.
The bottom staff is the bass staff because of the Bass Clef shown on the left side of the staff. The Bass Clef is also known as the F Clef because the line between the two dots is F.
You see two of the three basic notes on the staff. The one with the stems on them are called QUARTER NOTES. These notes are black notes. Each quarter note gets one beat, (BOOM). You see 4 of them and then a line.
The space between two bar lines is called a measure. The 4 notes in the one measure counts as four beats.
On the staff you see two 4's one on top of the other. This is called 4/4 or common time. The 4/4 is the time signature. That means that there are four beats per measure and the quarter note gets one beat.
You also see a circle note. That is called a WHOLE NOTE. The whole note always get 4 beats. Meaning that the note will be held throughout the measure in 4 4 time.
The note that you don't see, but is also a common note, is the HALF NOTE. Shaped like the quarter note, the half note is not black in the middle. It is like the whole note with a stem. The half note is worth 2 beats, or "half of the value of a whole note...which is how it gets it's name!
Each line and space has a letter.
The treble staff lines, starting from the bottom to top, are: E G B D F. (Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge)
The treble staff spaces, starting from the bottom to the top, are:
F A C E. (Easy to remember FACE isn't it!)
The bass staff lines, starting from the bottom to top, are:
G B D F A. (Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always)
The bass staff spaces, starting from the bottom to the top, are:
A C E G. (All Cars Eat Gas)
Now, if you look at all the letters, there are only 7, A B C D E F and G. These are the basic notes to music.
This part of the piano keyboard is made up of black and white keys. There are two sets of black keys, a set of three together and a set of two together. In the middle of the piano keys is "MIDDE C". The C key is the white key just left of the first set of two black keys. In the diagram above you should be able to find 3 C keys. (Hint, the first key on the keyboard on top is C.)
