I returned to university life in the Fall of 96. The last time I was "enjoying" the U-life was about 15 years ago, it's a little different experience this time. What's the differences? Well, I am on course to graduate the Summer of 99. Shesssh, my daughter will graduate from High School in 2001!! Another difference is that I am paying attention in school this time, and my grades show the work I am putting into school. Quite unlike last time!!! In the last decade, I have learned the value of a piece of paper, AKA a diploma. After returning to the U, I have discovered that I could be the parent of the majority of today's students. What a shock, since I really don't think of myself as being that old!!
Why did I voluntarily decide to return to a totalitarian, dictatorial oppressive regime, sometimes know as being a student at a university? Before I re-entered the university, I was a employed as a maintenance person for a senior housing condo. I enjoyed the work and the people who lived there were very nice to me. My boss was a different story, I think he was a bit of a control freak. I knew I had to leave the place when I really wanted to tell him to put the purchase order for 98 cents where the sun doesn't shine. The week before I left, when my second level supervisor found out about the 98 cent PO, she said that's why I had petty cash, just for those "little" (up to $100 dollars) purchases. I think she had a talk with him about that, well I hope so for the next guys benefit. Then a relationship with a member of the opposite sex broke up the spring of '96, so I had a lot of time to think. I realized that the housing management game, errrr business I mean, was pretty cyclical. Even more than the big aerospace company in Seattle, Washington, a previous employer of mine. Condos switch management companies and management companies switch personnel (maintenance workers bosses) more often than rabbits have baby rabbits. And there is the matter that you don't see very many 50 year old housing maintenance workers. Maybe because at times it's pretty hard work, maybe because of bosses like mine who felt that it was perfectly OK to clean the gutters on a four story building, with a steeply pitched roof, without a fall protection system (harness and rope.) Just be careful when you are near the edge of the roof. Hmmm, maybe if I would have cleaned the gutters, he wouldn't have had to deal with me anymore, hehehe!!!! OK, I agree that is really sick!! Soooo, I decided that I wanted to have that piece of paper, AKA a diploma, to show future employers. Having that piece of paper is going to make job hunting easier, right!?!? I sure hope so!!!!!!
What am I majoring in? Well, after realizing that safety in many workplaces wasn't as high a priority as I thought it should be (see the previous paragraph and this other story about a truck ride down a hill without brakes or why I think it's important to ensure that electricity is locked out before working on panels) I decided to become every business owners (particularly construction owners) nightmare-- an OSHA inspector. Sooooo, I am majoring in Loss Control Management, which means I will have a four year degree and have enough knowledge to, hopefully, be able to find the codes for whatever safety situations are presented to me in my future workplace. Just let me at the world and I will work my rear off to keep the housing maintenance worker's safe.
As it happens in the real world (which, in my humble opinion, a university isn't,) I changed my mind and decided to pursue a career with the airline industry. Why? Because my parents pointed out the benefits working for an airline, namely FREE travel!! That was sooooo nice of them to point that benefits of the airlines travel policy to me. I really, really hope to find a airline willing to employ me!!
Maybe I can keep some ramp worker from being sucked into a jet engine or at least save a someone's hearing. I hope.
UPDATE!!! OK, so there is _some_ new info that I need to add, such as my graduation date has slipped to summer or fall of 2000. Yehaaa!!! NOT!!! And there was the little adventure the fall of 98 and spring of 99 with a female member of the human race. I'm not quite ready to write about that one yet, it's tough to talk, and think about. And I still have dreams about it. Sighhhhhh. However, that will be another chapter in my history to write about, something else to chalk up to a impulsive moment. Of course, I am sure she is never impulsive either, right??? NOT!!!
