  • Lech Walesa became the leader of the newly organized Solidarity. This on the heels of winning the right to organize free trade unions. The strikes during the summer were about political freedom. The strikes got the workers increased wages, pensions, vacations and prmotions.

    On 8 December 1980 John Lennon was shot to death by a crazed fan. Lennon, who was 40 years old, was returning home with his wife when he was shot by suspect Mark David Chapman. In 1971 John made a plea for world peace. The world is mourning the lose of a great musician.

    Josip Broz, known as Marshall Tito, was the founding father of the modern Yugoslavia. He died on 4 May 1980 at the age of 87 years. Tito united six republics that now make Yugoslavia.

    Former Governor of California, Ronald Wilson Reagan became the 40th President of the United States on 4 November 1980. He defeated President Jimmy Carter by a landslide, winning 44 out of the 50 states. Reagan, a Hollywood Movie star, was thought to be too old to be President at the age of 69 and is the oldest man elected to the office of the President. He promised to put the people back to work again.

    Viewed by millions across the world, the fairytale Prince and Princess wed on 29 July, 1981. Prince Charles, oldest son of Queen Elizabeth and heir to the throne married Lady Diana Spencer in a spectacular ceremony. The ceremony took an hour and the couple then rode in a 70 year old gilded, horse drawn carriage to Buckingham Palace.

    Francois Miterrand is the first socialist president of France since 1930. He was successful in uniting leftwing parties, including communist, behind his campaign. He promises nationalization of banks, higher taxes for the rich and full employment.

    President Anwar el-Sadat, leader of Egypt, was assassinated on 6 October 1981 while attending a military parade. Gunmen came in and opened fired and hit Sadat immediately, killing him. Ten others were killed and 40 other wounded in the spray of bullets. Vice President Hosni Mubarak will control the state of affairs and said, "I hereby declare, in the name of the great soul passing away and in the name of the people, its constitutional institutions and its aramed forces, that we are committed to all charters, treaties and international obligations that Egpyt has concluded." Sadat and Begin, President of Israel, made history when the two made peace to their countries.

    On 14 April 1981 the space shuttle launched for the first flight into space. The space shuttle is the first reusable spacecraft. Astronauts John W. Y oung and Robert L. Crippen flew the mission around the earth's orbit 36 times which took 54 hours and 22 minutes. The space shuttle then successfully landed at Edwards AFB, California.

    Ride, Sally Ride
    She is the first US woman in space. Sally K. Ride is 32 years old and a physicist. She and the crew will be on board the Challenger making its seventh shuttle flight. The crew will deploy two satellites using the robotic arm. The German satellite was placed in orbit and then retreived by Sally.


    The AIDS virus was identified on 23 April 1984. Called the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS damages the immune system leaving those infected unable to fight off infectious iseases such as pneumonia and tuberulosis. The virus was discovered by the Pasteur Institute in France and at the US National Cancer Institute. The virus passes through body fluids during sex and via blood. The World Health Organization officials stated: "there is no risk of contracting AIDS as a result of casual or social contact with AIDS patients. The disease is believed to take millions of lives before the year 2000.

    Bruce Springsteen hits the top of the charts with his music, "Born in the USA" becoming the best seller album of the year in 1984. Bruce is from Asbury Park, New Jersey and love to say in touch with local bands. He writes about the working class American life.

    Indira Gandhi, 66 years old, was assassinated on 31 October 1984. She was Prime Minister of India four times and was gunned down by two members of her security guard as she wasled from her home to the of in New Delhi. She was the daughter of the former Prime Minister Nehru. Her son Rajiv will be sworn in as the new Prime Minister.

    In the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California, Carl Lewis wins four gold medals, matching Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

    For twenty years, Ferdinand Marcos was President of the Philippines. He fled the country on 25 February 1986 when Corazon Aquino was elected and sworn in as the new President. Marcos brought the nation to the edge of a military confrontation when he finally agreed to step down.

    The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on 28 January 1986 shortly after lift off. This was the worst accident in the history of US space flight. Killed in the accident were: Commander Francis R. Scobee, Pilot Michael J. Smith, Astronauts Judith A. Resnik, Ronald E. MaNair, Ellison S. Onizuka, Gregory B. Jarvis and Teacher Christa McAuliffe from Concord, New Hampshire. This was the Challengers 25th mission.

    The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 beginning the Cold War with Russia. The wall stopped the movement of people that was draining communist East Germany where in 1949 over 2.5 million people left. On 10 November 1989, realizing that they could no longer control the borders, they opened the borders allowing people to enter West Germany. The run was so out of control, that the Berlin Wall was attacked and pieces of the wall were torn down. This ended the Cold War, which the wall was the symbol.
