Supplies:
- quart size milk carton (for a large candle, but you can make it smaller by using smaller
milk cartons.) You may also use a juice can (from frozen concentrates, because it
needs to be cardboard so that you can peel it away when you're done.)
- taper candle any color
- wax
- ice
- crayons (to melt in wax to make candle colored)
- coffee can (to melt wax in)
- pan of water (to create a type of double boiler for the coffee can

Making the Candle
First: Put pan of water on the stove and place coffee can
inside (pressure may build up under the can, so it helps to set something in the water so
that the can is tipped relieving the pressure. I put a couple of screws in the pan
and set one edge of the can on it.) Put wax and crayons in the coffee can and melt
them. In the meantime set taper candle in the middle of quart size carton or juice can and
cut taper candle to the right size. Cut away some of the wax from around the top of the
wick, and place it in the center of your juice can. Fill area around Candle with
ice. Stir the wax to mix in the color.
Second: When wax is ready pour it into carton over the ice.
Let it set for about ten minutes and pour off the water (you will need to do this several
more times as the ice melts). After an hour tear the carton off and you have an
interesting and unique candle.
This is a good craft to do with children. You can have them put the ice around
the taper candle and later have them pour off the extra water. They will love
peeling off the carton revealing their new candle full of holes. I love to watch it
burn, and see the wax drip from different holes on the candle. You'll love it!!!
If you are looking for more crafts to do with children, The Daycare Home Page looks like it has a lot to
choose from. I didn't have much time to check it out, so if any of my crafts are the
same as what they may have it was not intentional. I also love the show Donna's Day
for crafts. Check out her web sight at www.donnasday.com.
