I've been attending Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions for years, starting with I-con when I was fifteen. I almost got myself roped into helping run Rhino, which was the very short lived SF convention in London, Ontario, but my family moved shortly before it came to be, so my first brush with organized fandom didn't hit until I was living in the states.

Of course, that didn't quite plant the seed. Despite repeated attendance at I-con, and reading references to Fantasy Fandom in the author's note sections of Piers Anthony titles, mostly Xanth as I recall, I still didn't put it together that there was an organized fandom out there that was having conventions just about every weekend. This is what I politely call 'being disassociative'.

In 1996 I clued in. My friends Matt Ringel and Josh Kronengold both worked on me to come to Lunacon, where I discovered that yes Virginia, there is a fandom. This year will be my ninth Lunacon. I have to admit to a great deal of sadness that the Lunarians have decided that in 2005, they will no longer be running Lunacon at the much beloved Escher Hilton, but will instead be hosting at the Meadowlands Hilton. Since then I've attended many other conventions, including the Floating Filk con, in its last n incarnations, Philcon, Confusion, The Gathering, and many more.
