CRY CRY CRY

I first heard Cry, Cry, Cry on WFUV; the same station that first turned me onto Dan Bern, Ron Sexsmith, The Jayhawks and so many others. I think the first track of theirs I heard was Shades of Grey, which was then a new cut from their self-titled album. The three members of Cry, Cry, Cry are Lucy Kaplansky, Richard Shindell and Dar Williams.

I think the next thing I heard was their cover of The Kid, by Buddy Mondlock. WFUV played it back to back with the familiar version by David Wilcox and the difference was striking enough that I wasn't annoyed at listening to the same song twice.

I think I then heard either The Ballad of Mary Magdalene or Down by the Water, and I was hooked. I meant to go out and get the CD right away, but I couldn't find a store that had it. By happy happenstance I wound up at a Dar Williams concert.

At the concert she and Nerissa Nields sang I Know What Kind of Love This Is, which is one of my favorite Nields tunes, and Dar mentioned that it was on the Cry, Cry, Cry album. That sold me a second time. I went and bought the CD at the merch table.

The official website is now gone, but there's still Cry Cry Cry Chords, maintained by Ron Greitzer. It has chords for all the songs with guitar parts, as well as a lot of the lyrics.
