Music Reviews

Editor's Note: Hey everyone, this will be a section where you will be able to find reviews of various music CDs that I buy. Most of these CDs will be Hong Kong Pop. Hopefully you will enjoy this section. I will post a few English CDs, but mostly Chinese =) Thanks! All these CDs can be found at Asia CD. Support the artists.

Go Ahead

Here is one of the new CDs I got, starring Yuki Tsui. This is the newest young girl out of Taiwan. I am not sure how old she is because there are not many web sites dedicated to her, and the bio on her CD did not reveal the year she was born...hehe. I think she is like 18, but you never know. I think this CD is pretty good. I thought it would just be a pretty girl who cannot sing, but I was mistaken. She ranks up there as pretty good, but Sammi still is number one! Here style of music is kind of different from the normal; most of her songs are more lively and happy, and not many love songs. I think she is trying to get the kid market...some of her songs are fairly childish. What was interesting was the CD loaded in Windows 95. There are some programs to watch one MTV. I think she has potential to become big, but the biggest star in Taiwan is A-Mei. I did enjoy the bonus song the most, and I liked her first CD more. This one is okay; all I can say about this CD is it is different. If have not guessed, this whole CD is in mandarin as well.

Have You For One Day

I have been getting tons of CDs lately...hehe. Anyways, this one is by Leo Koo. I chose this one so I could just get a feel of how good a singer he is. After this CD I can say I am pretty impressed. Of all the new Hong Kong singers these days, I think he is one of the better ones. I liked track number 1, 4, and 6. The only thing is I think most of his songs seem to always be sad, most of his songs seem to be always gloomy. Anyways, I would recommend this CD only if you do not have his old stuff, or just want the VCD..hehe.

Listen to Sammi

Sammi Cheng just released her new album called Listen to Sammi. This is the for the new year...hehe. I think it is pretty good. I do not really like most of the songs, but track 8 and 11 are my favorite. I like the instrumental music in track 11 and I think Sammi gave a great performance in track 8. And the dream beat that simulates the heart beat in track 11 is pretty neat! Track 10 is pretty good to raise the spirits...more of an upbeat song. I think Sammi did not sing too well on some songs, but I do like her efforts for trying different styles of songs. I preferred last years album, but I guess one cannot release a great album all the time...hehe!

I'll Be Loving You

Gigi Leung finally released a cantonese album. I have been waiting for this for quite some time...hehe. Overall, this was an enjoyable CD. I was really surprised to see Sam Hui as one of the composers for a song. I don't know if this is new, but I rather liked that song...hehe. Obviously this CD helps reveal the limited talent Gigi has at singing, but most of the songs are enjoyable enough to listen. Mainly the reason I got this CD is because I think Gigi is fairly pretty, but I don't think this CD cover captures her beauty...hehe, maybe it's the hair-cut. I found myself listening to track 1, 3, and 10 the most. The reason why I think this CD isn't the best because the entire CD is around 39 minutes, which I think is pretty short. At least there is a pretty good MTV that came with the CD...=)

Feels So Good

Sammi Cheng finally released her new album! In this CD, there are a lot of good songs. I especially like track 5 and track 8. There is even a duet with All-4-One. Sammi does a pretty good job, but my only complaint is you cannot hear her too well. Anyways, this CD is not bad. But I expected a little more. The whole CD is only about 49 minutes long, kinda short. And most songs are about 3 mins and 50 secs; there are barely any songs over 4 mins. I would expect some longer songs, but at least there is a VCD, hehe. Even though they only give one MTV, it is still okay. Overall, I like this CD; I also liked the stickers that came with the CD.

You Are My Woman

Andy Lau has also released his new CD. Overall not bad, but not great. There are some great songs and other medicore songs. I did like the VCD included with the CD. I got to see some scenes from Andy' new movie ^_^ I did like track 5 and I kinda like track 1. Track 1 was a song made by Kenny G. I would get this CD if you like the typical Andy Lau love songs. His performance has improved a lot since his first CDs. I just got this CD for the VCD, hehe.

Sunny Day

I recently purchased this CD, and I don't even know why. I just saw Coco Lee's MTV and decided I wanted to get her CD. She is being promoted as the Asian Mariah Carey by Sony of Taiwan, and so I wanted to see how good a singer she was. She definitely sings with a more Western Style. Her type of singing is more towards the R&B and hip hop. I think it is okay, if you want something different. (No wonder Hong Kong did not accept her with open arms.) I still like the Hong Kong style more with Sammi Cheng (patiently waiting for her new CD, hehe.) But this CD is not bad. I got this CD because I liked track 3, Happy Feelings. Then when I was reading the list of songs, I saw that she was chosen to sing the mandarin version of the Mulan theme sing =) I guess her performance was okay, but again she sang it with a Western Style, and it was in mandarin. I like Kelly Chan's version of Mulan, and her version is with a Hong Kong style and in Cantonese. But, this CD is average at best. Maybe I just do not really like hip hop type stuff. I would get this CD if you only understand Chinese, but if you want to hear Western Style songs, get the ones with American singers. She is not as good as Mariah Carey and her hip hop just is not that good. She mixed Chinese and English together, kinda weird. Maybe I am not used to hearing Chinese in hip hop, but there is better.

Gigi

Everyone, this is Gigi Leung. I recently bought her mandarin CD. This CD is a pretty good CD, but Gigi's singing abilities are extremely limited. I do like this CD, especially track 1,2,7, and 8. Most songs are about love and things like that. I would get this CD if you like Gigi and don't mind listening to mandarin. I am trying to learn mandarin, so I probably will get a few more mandarin CDs to learn, hehe. Also, I got this CD because I think she is pretty, hehe =) Thanks!

Release Oneself

In Hong Kong is he is known as the Singing God (Gu Sun-roughly in cantonese, hehe). This CD helps prove it. He no longer sings regular love songs, Jacky Cheung really starts to challenge himself in this CD. My favorite tracks are 4,6,7,8,9,10,11. I did like a lot of the songs. Also, here is a pretty interesting version of Chinese Rap with a soft ballad touch. Well, I really liked this CD; Jacky really shows his feelings and his singing abilities. No wonder he is number one. Also it is in Cantonese, hehe. I liked the Snow Wolf Lake CD better, but this one is still great. I would get it.

Snow Wolf Lake

This is a great CD. This CD contained music from Jacky Cheung's famous concert, Snow Wolf Lake. Too bad it was only performed in Hong Kong, or I would have gone. This concert is like an opera with actions and motions; also the songs tell a love story. But instead of regular opera music, this concert is filled with Ballads and Hong Kong Pop. I also really liked the duet on track 6 on the first CD. Also track 9 was a terrific song. Even though this CD is not very cheap, the songs are worth it. Also, there are tons of high quality pictures, so every Jacky fan has to get this CD. This CD is a must buy. This is a cantonese CD if anyone is wondering, hehe.

Thanks and come again! This site is still under construction.
