So much for sleeping in;) We got up at about 11-ish... I guess 6 hours is better than none:o)
Galen seems to have enjoyed his birthday present=) We're to go over for dinner...more on that later=)
Anyway, we went to LANL for a talk by Harrison Schmitt - one of a dozen people to set foot on the moon. In fact, the only scientist (geologist) to go to the moon. (Apollo 17, 3 days) There was a slide show and he basically talked about the different pictures they had from the moon. The picture of the nighttime take off was pretty cool=) And so was his orange dust picture. Unfortunately, the dark room during the slide show + sleepy kids didn't work very well... It was an hour long talk and I msut have missed about 20-30 minutes worth;)
Afterwards, we(just us earthwatch peoples=)) got to talk in another room with him. Actually, I'm afraid to say he was a pretty boring person. For a scientist, he was pretty interested in politics and business-type stuff. I was expecting some kind of science-like talk seing as he was a geologist and all, but we got a talk on his use of solar radiation dust stuff on the moon. Pretty much just a big plug for his moon-mining operation.
We then spent the night up at FHO. We started looking at some double stars - Alberio is really pretty:o) Galen or Don must have pointed it out to us - the stars are pretty far apart and one is blue and the other is yellow! the two colors together are really pretty:o)
We also used the catalogue and such to look at some random Messier objects. Inside the dome, some of the older kids are looking at things and taking pictures, too. They had the ring nebula and the dumbbell nebula in view earlier and now they're working on taking pictures with the CCD. We got some pictures of the satellite nebula, whirlpool nebula and the owl nebula, we think. Yeah for the dome=) Dome is warm and happy unlike the cold outside:o)
We were going to stay and see Jupiter and Saturn...but they wouldn't be rising until 3:30 and then they'd be behind the trees. The moon was starting to get things too bright and so we decided to leave at 3.
Back to the hotel and sleep!
And a parting thought - "I am having a spiritual Pringles experience!"
