Well, nothing big happned today - we got to relax:o)
We slept in most of the morning since we had been up late at FHO the night before.
At 2, we had a lecture about the solar system. It was some pretty basic information - we learned that 99.9% of the mass in the solar system is in the Sun. we learned that the terrestrial planets are the inner planets which lay up to 2 AUs from the sun. The Gas planets lay 2-30 AUs from the sun and Pluto's just out there somewhere;) Out farther are the comets. Farther out, is this giant cloud of dust we believe the comets come from.
We learned our solar system is located on the Orion Spiral Arm of the galaxy, 28,000 light years from the center. We then learnd about each of the planets and the sun the comets and the Oort cloud - just basic info about each, like length of a year, a day, eccentricity, distance from the sun, etc.
We then had some free time to work on our webpages on the computers. Since I hate Macs, I opted to work once I got home - so I found out from Galen a little about secure shell and FTPing to the server later.
Corinne and I headed back toward the hotel - we cashed our stipend checks LANL had given us and Corinne made some phone calls at the hotel.
I started my random campaign to tape everybody's quotes (which I'm afraid isn't working out....perhaps I'll just include the quotes on the CD...but I don't have time to put it up on the web, sorry!)
Later that evening, we got a lecture on the Solar Wind and the Northern Lights. I thought that was a pretty cool lecture - watching the video of the Northern Lights was very cool - although the music was a bit cheesy;) Oh - I loved when the first image came up...and then Christine said "It's...green". well, first of all, that reminded me of Data from Star Trek when he got that green drink... but anwyay - it was just amusing because the image of th sun was green:o) Anyway, we got to see some demonstrations of Solar Flares and depictions of the northern lights from earlier civilizations, etc. Spiffy:o)
