My FedLife Story

A lot of this is probably in the wrong order, but it was quite a long time ago...well, on with my story...

I was taking this math program from Stanford over the summer of '95 which involved e-mail, so my parents let us get AOL. I think that's one of the best things to ever happen to me:o) Well...I wouldn't say AOL's the best thing to happen to me, really...just the concept of the internet...I've never really liked AOL since Fed's left.

AOL was charging per hour then - a monthly fee for like 5 hours and then $3 an hour after that...well, something like that anyway:o) My dad didn't except me to be using that much time since I was just using the e-mail once a week. Well, I wasn't going to let those 5 hours go to waste:o) So, one day - I believe it was in mid-September of that year or so - I looked around the games channel. I was really into Star Trek those days - now my obsession is X-Files... I think the space-fantasy part was what interested me into stumbling onto Fed. I entered as EAudrey, that being my screen name. You didn't have a choice to your name then - you just were your SN without spaces. If you wanted a different name, well, you would have to get another SN for Fed.

I don't remember much of my first months in Fed - I just remember being addicted. I didn't want to waste time, so I had downloaded and printed the guides to read before I entered. This was my first role-playing game - so I acted like myself, not knowing what else to do. Of course, I don't think I talked to many people, anyway...

I found my way to the bored official and got myself a ship and started hauling. Bad idea. That's what eventually got me kicked off AOL. That math program had ended because I was doing it in school now, yet we still had AOL.. I think I had made it up to Adventureuse (is that how you spell it? I always had problems spelling that and Guild Maitreuse...but before I made GM, they had changed the spelling, anyway) Unfortunately, I had so much fun hauling (fun and hauling in the same sentence without not? :::giggles::: Amazing;) Actually, I really do enjoy work, although I've always claimed not to) that I didn't notice how much time I was using. Well, my dad got the AOL bill...I think there was only an extra $5 charge on it from my playing Fed, but that was enuf to set him off. I remember quite vividly him talking on the phone to the AOL people canceling our account as I pleaded with him not too...

For quite a while, I believed that was the end of my Fed life. I was going through an awful period of withdrawal;) I would dream about it and hope that I could convince my dad to get AOL back within 6 months before my character got deleted because I had worked so hard to get to that rank.

A while later(about a year or so, I think), I remember getting another ISP...the older of my two younger brothers and I had been begging my dad for quite some time. Well, eventually we got rid of that and in Nov. 1996, we got AOL again since we heard they were going to start charging a flat rate. November 17th, actually...I will always remember that date quite clearly.

Can you guess where the first place I went was?

My old character was gone - but at least this time I knew what I was doing. I rushed to get my new ship and began hauling. Hmm...speaking of hauling, I remember an incident where I jumped at someone for a chance to haul. I don't remember which lifetime this was in, but they told me to go to a planet and so I typed systems, not knowing about the > command yet. Apparently, the guy had a spybeam on me :::chuckle::: So he told me to go to a planet and head south where he shot me. I was quite bewildered. I remember insuring a few times and going back up to be shot again until I finally got the idea that he was really mad at me so the next time I stay put on the planet. He explained that he had a spybeam on me and I didn't get it, of course, not knowing what they were. He then explained that he couldn't turn it off when I had typed systems. I personally thought the scroll wasn't that awful...:::shrug:: It's much worse now, anyway;) I didn't end up hauling for him.

I also remember logging every game I had in case something important happened...I don't do that anymore - I think I stopped logging a little after I got to Squire...noting really interesting happened to me anymore... I remember going through a few of my logs...I really didn't keep too much unless it was promotion related...I saw a conversation with Uni and Bella and Mdg4 and Mail4Money I had kept...at that time I had no idea who Bella was...I had kept the convo cuz of something else...we were discussing addictions. Oh nevermind, here's the convo:o)

Your comm unit relays a message from Mail4Money, "ôHi gary. Welcome to the 4th largest addiction in the universe. (1.life 2.nicotine 3.caffine 4.FEDERATION!!)".

Your comm unit relays a message from Uniquette, "I think Fed ranks 2nd behind breathing Mail...keep playing ;)".

Your comm unit relays a message from Mdg4, "Mail, Don't you think caffine should be number 1?".

Your comm unit relays a message from Bella, "Hold the presses - Fed moves up to no 3 addicition".

Your comm unit relays a message from Mail4Money, "Well, I think they are ALL tied, but life, caffiene, and nicotene, at least for me are required for FED!!"

I tend to agree with Uni, myself;) I don't think I've ever seen Bella since. And that was my 27th game - I'm at about 1500 now;) Well, I've seen Bella's face on the back of the coin, I guess that doesn't count;) I learned that from a Final Fedpardy question....but more on Fedpardy later...

Somebody in Flying got me my first Imperial ship I believe...I think it was Flying...maybe it was Mba. But they gave me some money, let me buy a ship there and started me hauling off the WB. I haven't really been back there since...

I made Trader on my 36th game and was yelling happily over channel 3 when I did. :::looks back over some of her old logs::: Umm...next mention of anything seems to be when Zoyra helped me learn to buy a stat. Oh dear...now I don't remember if Zoyra was a he or she...I think a she since Future is one of the History planets...::::is confused:::..I'll just not use any pronouns for a bit;) So Zoyra found me the token (which I had never heard of) I remember Zoyra telling me to wait by the watchman on earth (I think that's where I was waiting, at least) while it was fetched. Zoyra then led me to the vending machine and had me put the coin into the slot. Then off to the Sanitarium where Zoyra gave me a meg to buy a stat point. Zoyra said that he/she intended to give me another 30 meg at that time...he/she never did....I don't mind, of course. Actually, I would love to repay Zoyra for the help someday...

For quite a while I just listened to other's pc's and didn't ask for any of my own since it looked like the Merchies were awfully busy. I remember quite a few Backdraft pc's - I figured it must be a great duchy to trade in since so many were giving pc's for it...however, I don't think I ever visited BD as a trader... Azureth, one of the pc'ers I saw quite often recommended Dimension (which is no longer with us...) where I traded in often. Speaking of Dimension, I remember the day when NamCD had a 2 gig reward...and a neg. 2 gig reward...I wonder if that'll ever happen again in Fed. I also remember the story of the Duke becoming a Duchesse...(and I don't care if its spelled without the e now! I'll be spelling it Duchesse til I die..well, maybe not that long...hmm...maybe if I bribe enuf people, if I ever make that rank, I can be a Duchesse instead of a Duchess. I liked the old spellings of everything better anyway, even if I could never spell biscuit right:o) ).

One day - I think it was New Year's Eve based on what I was saying on my log...I remember ViperBrd asking on 4 for some traders. I volunteered and I don't remember what planet we met on. It wasn't Viper's - he claimed he was like planetary manager or something....But he named some runs for us to do - I remember him asking us to stop by and say something every time we did one so he'd know how many each of us did. He seemed amazed at my speed and so once he timed me... I did a run of.."gen from talisman" in "1'06"(15)" I also remember being quite proud of being the person with the most runs that night...how I ever had enough patience to pull of 18 was amazing;) We bid eachother a Happy New Years and I haven't seen him since:o)
