Steps in Making Rag Quilt

Step 1

For each square in the quilt, you will need 2 fabrics cut in 7" squares and one flannel square for batting cut in 4 3/4" squares.  So for a quilt with 12 finished squares, you will need 12 blue squares, 12 red squares and 12 flannel squares.

Step 2

Place one flannel square centered on the wrong side of one of the fabric squares.  You may use a temporary spray on the flannel, if necessary.  Do this for each square.

Step 3

Place a blue square on top so that you have a sandwich of red, flannel and blue fabric.  Mark an X in the center of the blue square and pin or use temporary spray to adhere all layers together for stitching.

Step 4

You may stitch the squares together using factory sewing (not cutting thread between squares).  I used red thread for this step to match the other fabric.

Step 5

When you have all the squares stitched in one direction of the X, cut them apart and begin stitching the second direction of the X.  When the X is completed, cut the squares apart.
