Released in 1968. Produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Loosely based on Arthur C. Clarke's story The Sentinel. A landmark science fiction film and saga of mankind’s past and future contacts with alien intelligence. Academy Award Winner for special effects and top grossing film of 1968. A philosophically challenging and indulgent visual feast. This was one of the first science fiction films to have a large budget (which went mainly into the special effects). Previously sci-fi was a cheap genre, generally only producing B-grade movies, but it was not until the Seventies that the sci-fi explosion really began. The critics did not care much for the film but young audiences did and in the long run 2001 was a huge moneymaker. The stylised space crafts utilising space-age white with soft contoured seating were designed by Oliver Mourgue. The costumes for the film were by Hardy Amies. The space uniforms were inspired by Courreges.
