9-10-2000 -- Although it's not often lately that I have the time for it between my other activities, I still love to read. Next to my night-table, there is currently a stack of about five books which I've either started reading and haven't finished, or which I should be reading. Perhaps if I spent a little less time online, I'd get to the bottom of the stack before it grows even taller. At the moment, I'm reading the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series. These books might just be the funniest I've ever read. They provoke a laugh at least once per paragraph, if not once per every other sentence. The writing seems very casual on the surface, but when you really look at how the words are put together, it becomes apparent that the author is truly a brilliant writer. I didn't used to be able to choose a favorite author, but I can now safely say that Madeleine L'Engle holds the most honored place on my list, especially since I finally read her first novel, The Small Rain. I identified with Katherine Forrester, the heroine of that book, more closely than I've ever identified with a fictional character. All L'Engle's books are amazing. It's fascinating to follow the way she weaves together events and characters from book to (sometimes seemingly unrelated) book. At right, you 'll find a list of my favorite authors and links to websites about them and their works. |
