The music and the dance were one and the same expression, so beautifully did they complement one another: sound giving impulse to movement, dance giving visual emphasis to the music, and each doing what the other could not do, thereby creating a total experience greater than the sum of the parts.

~Stephen Lawhead

I've always loved music. It must be “in my bones.” I can't remember a time when I wasn't trying to pick out a song on the piano.

9-11-2000 -- Lately I have been listening to a lot of folk-rock and classic rock. Some of my favorite rock-ish musicians and bands are James Taylor, Sting, Sarah McLachlan, and the latest addition to my listening library, Guster.

My most recent adventure of musical exploration has been into the world of jazz. Dave Brubeck and Bill Evans have turned out to be instant favorites. Paul Desmond, sax player of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, puts out some of the most joyously lyrical playing...

No matter what else I listen to, my true musical love always has been and always will be classical music. I'm especially fond of the violin and chamber music. As for favorite classical period, my saying used to be "baroque is best," but I'm really starting to enjoy 20th century music more than anything. The unusual chord changes and dissonance which used to repel me are now what attract me to the music. It's amazing how emotionally wrenching a few well-picked chords can be. Samuel Barber's violin concerto is incredible, especially when played by my favorite violinist, Joshua Bell.

Right now, the future of the chamber orchestra with which I was playing is uncertain, so I'm in an orchestral no-man's-land. One of these days, I'm going to play in a string quartet. A few fleeting quartets have passed through my violinistic life, but none have materialized for long, if at all. Still, I WILL play in a string quartet. I MUST play in a...

(Links to music sites of interest will be forthcoming. I had links here before, but they were egregiously outdated. This whole section needs to be expanded. One of these days... I hope to eventually have a page of my concert and CD reviews, to let my inner, evil, music critic twin have a chance to shine. [Inside joke.])

(This page is eventually going to be become a lot more about music than about dance, but I love that quote above so much that it shall always have a place on this page.)

I love to dance --probably because it's so interrelated with music and lends emphasis to music more aptly than any other art form.

9-11-2000 -- This will be my thirteenth year of doing ballet, that is, if I get my butt out of this chair and back into the studio.

During the summer, I took my first ballet classes in over a year. It took me three weeks/classes to feel like a ballerina again, and then the summer session was over. Bummer.
