Type 1 diabetes is also known as Insulin-Dependant Diabetes Mellitus or Juvenile Diabetes, which usually developes in young people between the ages of 0 and 30. It is fairly uncommon, accounting for only one in every five cases of diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
The typical symptoms of Diabetes are as follows but they need not all be present in the one person:
Symptoms may develop quickly (in days or weeks) in someone with type 1 diabetes.
A doctor must be seen if two or more of these symptoms are present. A blood test showing a high glucose level will the confirm the diagnosis.
