INFORMATION ABOUT TYPE 2 DIABETES

Type 2 Diabetes/Non insulin-Dependent Diabetes. It is more common, accounting for about four out of every five cases of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a disease that affects the way the body uses food. Most of the people who get type 2 diabetes are over weight. Medical experts do not know the exact cause of type 2 diabetes. They do, however, know type 2 diabetes runs in the families. A person can inherit a tendency to get type 2 diabetes. But it usually takes another factor such as obesity to bring on the disease.

Risk Factors

Type 2 diabetes runs in families. Nearly all people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are over 30 years old. Half of all new cases are aged 55 and older. Being overweight or obese. Insulin resistance increases with weight. High-fat diet. A key cause of obesity. Insulin Resistance inreases with lack of exercise.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Symptoms may develop slowly (in months or years) in Type 2 Diabetes compared with quickly in Type 1 Diabetes.

Up to half the patients with Type 2 Diabetes may have no obvious symptoms: a high blood or urine glucose level may be found on a routine medical check. An overweight person with vague ill health should be checked for diabetes, especially if they have relatives with diabetes.
