Foreword

At various times in church history, Christian witnesses put to death have either been neglected or venerated. The Bible does neither; it encourages all Christians to witness (see biblical introduction) at the same time it does record some Christian witnesses put to death among other witnesses.

In 1996 Dr Barrett published the annual average for Christian "martyrdom" worldwide at 159,000 (International Bulletin of Missionary Research, Vol 20 No 1 January 1996). He also estimates that 40 million Christians have been killed since AD 33.

In this little site I have focused on four areas of this world at different times during this century. These little ‘cameos’ give us an insight without overwhelming us with numbers and details. To bring us up-to-date I have included the deaths of three Christians in the last decade of this century (acknowledgement due to Compass Direct).

I have included a bibliography of some books I have read and quoted from; obviously there is much more to learn and practice in Christian witnessing throughout the world.
