Being a trainer, I recommend some form of training for every dog. How far you need to take training is up to you and your dog. Some dogs need more training than others do. Sometimes you can do the training, and sometimes you may need professional help. Remember to not take on any training problem that you aren't sure you can handle yourself. Seek help first.
Here are some helpful hints on finding the right trainer:
Ask around. Veterinarians, groomers, pet sitters, friends, family, and other dog enthusiasts can be an excellent source of information about trainers. What did they think of the person? Was the person helpful? Did your source of information enjoy working with the trainer?
Call any prospective trainer on the phone. Are they helpful? Do they answer your questions openly? Do they teach privately, in a group setting, in your home or their home/facility? Think of the atmosphere that would benefit your dog the most.
Ask for a demonstration. Take a look at what a prospective trainer does first-hand. Watch their dog. Is their dog focused on them? Does the dog seem to enjoy the work?
Have the trainer meet your dog. Remember that dogs have a keen sense for spotting human intent. Does the trainer seem interested in your dog? Does the trainer interact with your dog in a positive manner? Does your dog seem to like the trainer? Keep in mind the situation, too. If you are seeking professional help because of an aggression problem, how does the trainer react?
Do you like the trainer? Remember that you will be working with this person on a regular basis. If the trainer works from a boarding facility, do you trust the trainer and kennel staff? Do they ask you the right kinds of questions? Do they explain things in a way you can easily understand?
Keep in mind that credentials and experience are helpful, but quality is more important than quantity, especially when it comes to your dog.
It's a lot to think about, but when it comes to your four-legged child, you'll feel better knowing you made the right choice the first time.
