National Institute for Clinical Excellence
THE first NHS body set up to decide on the best medicines
and treatments for the whole country - so ending unfair "postcode" prescribing
- started work April 1, 1999.
The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE)
will evaluate new treatments and make recommendations for England and Wales,
instead of health authorities being left to decide which treatments they can or cannot afford.
It will bring an end to a situation where adjacent health authorities
look at different evidence in different ways and come to different conclusions.
The authority will judge 30 to 50 treatments a year and, although it does not
have the power to force doctors to follow its recommendations,
doctors will have to explain different choices if they make them.

Not a very big list yet - but very friendly - I get the digest on this one ... and they don't mind that I'm not Jewish.
