"Spero Meliora Caducis"
The coat of arms on the left was granted to Székhelyi Mailáth Miklós (Nicolaus) in 1643, the earliest identifiable ancestor from whom this family descended and who was the first to use the title "de Székhely". The other coat of arms was granted to Székhelyi Mailáth József (1735-1810) in 1785.
The Székhelyi Mailáth were administrators, and held positions ranging from Lord Chief Justice, Chancellors, corvette ship's captain, cavalry officers, royal legal advisors, Lord Lieutenants, county officials and one was even a bishop in Transylvania, another was a writer and historian. |
