We have three
pets who generously allow us to stay here with them. Our 12-year-old
female, desexed cat, Muffin, has been with us since she came from an animal
shelter at 6 weeks of age. She has a very cantankerous nature (and always
has had) but we love her just the same. She avoids other cats unless
they are small enough to be bossed around by her but often takes her ill-nature
out on any human who happens to be around at the right (or wrong) time.
One of her favourite games is to lie on the side of an arm chair waiting
for some innocent victim to pass by - this innocent victim often turns
out to be our dog. Once the victim is within striking distance, Muffin
will take a swipe at them - it's a game that she seems to enjoy playing
but for some reason, no-one else cares too much for it - naturally her
claws are always out when she plays it. Photo above but hard to see. As you can see, trying to get her to stay still for a photo just isn't easy!
The real ruler
of the household is our 7-year-old female, desexed, Australian Blue Cattle
Cross dog, Tess - not even the vet has managed to decide just what it is
that she's crossed with. She came here from the RSPCA when she was
5 months old and already, at such an early age, she'd learnt to fear what
humans could do to her due to being mistreated before the RSPCA received
her. She was extremely nervous and timid when she first arrived here
but with time, patience and love reassuring her, she began to take over
the household. When I'd first seen her at the RSPCA, I wondered why
she was the only dog in a cage by herself - I was soon to discover the
reason - she does not tolerate other animals well at all. Even Muffin
who had been here prior to Tess arriving is just barely tolerated - of
course, Muffin's "game" doesn't do much to help that situation. Tess
is extremely possessive of "HER' family where other animals are concerned.
She loves her family and loves to play with them and with any type of ball
at all - she's a great soccer player - try getting a ball past her - and
will spend hours playing by herself with a ball if no-one is available
to play with her. She loves to fetch a ball and return it so you
can throw it again - but she will keep going long after everyone else has
had enough of the game and even after she herself is totally exhausted.
She's even been known to take the ball to the guinea pig's cage, and to
Muffin, in the hope of that one of them would throw it for her.
Needless to say, she's not impressed when they don't oblige. When
any of the family goes out, they can expect to be greeted as if they've
been away for weeks once they return - especially me - even if they've
only been gone for 10 minutes. She loves to be with us at all times.

The final member
of our household is our 7-year-old Abyssinian guinea pig, Sniffer - not
desexed, but believe it or not, her mate was - after Sniffer had 3 babies
to him. Unfortunately we have no photo of Sniffer but she's a light brown
and white furball with a wonderful nature. She came to stay with
us after a neighbour went into hospital and I looked after Sniffer while
she was away - a month later, the neighbour asked if I'd like to have her
as she no longer wanted to keep her - so Sniffer's been with us ever since.
She's long outlived her mate and 3 babies, plus various other female guinea
pigs that she had with her for company at times - but she's a fighter and
loves life so she's still gracing us with her presence. She's a pleasure
to have, very affectionate and also very funny at times - she's given us
many hours of pleasure.
UPDATE
Our little fighter, Sniffer, has now passed away. She had a very full life and fought to live right to the very end but it was time for her to leave us and join her mate, her babies and her friends who all passed away before her.
