Adelbert Eugene HEATH on 27 Jun 1936 in Hasting MI.. Charlotte Zuschnitt
attended the Chidester School in Rutland
Township and was one of the first members of 4-H in Barry County.
She graduated from Hastings High School in 1929 and went to
Western Michigan Teachers College, graduating with a major in
Home Economics.Teaching positions were not plentiful in 1933 and
she was most fortunate to be hired to teach the Welcome Corners
School in Carlton Township for $35 a month with 37 students.
Because of this experience she acquired a Junior High teaching
position in Hastings.
Adelbert Heath graduated from Hastings High School in lq28 and
Michigan State College in 1933 as a Civil Engineer. kgineering
jobs were:no easier to find than teaching jobs, so he returned to
his home in Hastings. He received a commission with the U.S. Dept.
of Interior and worked with a survey party on the Yankee Springs
Project.
Charlotte and Adelbert were members of the First Methodist
Church in Hastings and their paths crossed in the Young People's
Group. After their marriage, she continued teaching and he worked
for Consumer's Power Company laying out rural powerlines. As
their family grew, life had many changes. Charlotte returned to
High School teaching and Adelbert joined Rich Manufactoring Corp.
in Battle Creek, then to E.W. Bliss Company. Their children became
involved in 4-H and Charlotte assumed leadership for varied groups
--25 years of it.
Their home of seven gables, south of Hastings, became quieter
as each child left to go away to school. Adelbert, who had returned
to the valve plant in Battle Creek was transferred to Southfield
in 1968.Charlotte retired from teaching and they moved to North-
ville,Mich. Five years later they were sent to Hamilton, Alabama
where a new plant was being built. These seven years were filled
with new and rewarding experiences. Then in 1976 they returned to
the farm home where the visits of Grandchildren again make the
house resound..
Sally Heath was a member of 4--H in sewing,dairy and cattle
judging. Her school years were very active ones, While in Hastings
High School she was a member of the High School Band, debate team,
Fortnight staff,editorof the Annual and National Honor Society.
She graduated in 1956 Validictorian of her class and received a
National Merit Scholarship--the first year of awards to high
school graduates. Sally went to the University of Michigan where she
was an Alpha Lambda member the first year and Phi Beta Kappa her
Junior year.She received her degree, majoring in Physics. The next
year she went to the California University of Berkeley and earned
her Masters Degree.
After graduation she taught at nt.San Antonio College in Walnut,
California,then on to the New York State University at Cortland.
She left teaching for a year to study at the University of New
Mexico at Albuquerque.Her desire was to find a teaching position
in Northern California, but not finding one that year, she taught a
year in Atlanta, Ga. She has found the Northern area of California
the most enjoyable and has remained there.
Sally spent several summers at the Battle Creek Camp Fire Girls
Camp, Camp Kitanniwa, first as a counselor,a CIT unit director,
and then the camp director. She enjoys camping, hiking, and traveling. Children
were: Mary Ellen HEATH, Sally
Louise HEATH, William George HEATH.
