Cleora Britton Anderson. At age 7, Cleora Britton Anderson and her three younger siblings were sent to St. Joseph Orphanage in Cold Spring. Her father had died, and her mother was an alcoholic. At age 18, Mrs. Anderson returned to live with her mother. Under her care, she stopped drinking, said Mrs. Anderson's daughter, Gail Barnes of Florence. At age 51, Mrs. Anderson became a house parent at the former Hope Cottage in Latonia, where she took care of neglected and abused children. At age 79, Mrs. Anderson retired as an in-home caregiver because of health problems. On Monday, at age 83, Mrs. Anderson died at Mercy Franciscan Hospital in Western Hills. She was a resident of St. Francis Court in South Fairmount but had spent most of her life in Northern Kentucky. She began work as a short-order cook at Carl's Grill in Covington. Over the next three decades, while raising nine children, Mrs. Anderson continued to work as a cook at Latonia Chili, Covington Chili and finally at Greyhound Grill in Fort Mitchell. A few women who worked with Hope Cottage were regulars at Greyhound Grill. By 1974, they had convinced Mrs. Anderson to work there. It became her life. She lived at the facility and children were brought in at all hours. "All the children there called her 'Grandma,' too," Barnes said. "She was a grandmother to so many children. Even when they were grown up and saw Mom on the street they called her Grandma." One of the children closest to Mrs. Anderson was Shauna, an infant whose mother was an addict. "She was skin and bones hen she was brought in," Barnes said. "No one thought she could live, but my mother nursed and fed her back to health." Mrs. Anderson left Hope Cottage in 1984 and began private home care. She met her second husband, Edgar Anderson, while providing care to him. When her own health began to fail, Mr. Anderson was there. "She took care of him, then he took care of her," Barnes said. Her first husband, Ralph G. Britton; and a daughter, Virgie Britton, died previously. Besides her husband and daughter, Gail, survivors include four sons, Thomas, of Newport, Archie, of Latonia Lakes, Butch and Ralph Britton, both of Erlanger; daughters Delores Henegar of Erlanger, Lucille Sullivan of North Port, Fla. and Lisa Brock of Dry Ridge; a brother, Leroy Tuttle, and sister, Lucille Henegar, both of Highland Heights; 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today with service following at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
