Virgil A. Lewis was a noted Mason County historian, teacher, and author. He was appointed as the first State Historian of West Virginia (1905-1912).

The home is furnished with period furnishings. This home with beautiful porches is on the National Register of Historic Places listed 1979 as the Shumaker-Lewis House on Brown Street. The house is vacant but is open for public tours by appointment. There are very few houses remaining in the area that have ornate wood trim.

This last remaining piece of beautiful architecture is located in Mason, West Virginia near the Ohio River. The house really needs a friend.

Virgil Anson Lewis was born 6 July 1848 to George W. and Lucy Edwards Lewis. Jim and Virgil Lewis both descend from Revolutionary War Soldier Arthur Edwards who settled in Mason County following the Revolution. Go to Jim's Arthur Edwards Genealogy Page for details or click here.
