Composting

How composting works

Bacteria that live in the soil feed upon and digest plant and animal wastes. This process causes the decay of these wastes. The activity of the bacteria releases heat, which in turn speeds up the process of decay. As the wastes decay, they break down into the essential nutrients that you plants need to grow. Depending on how you treat your compost pile, it takes from 6 weeks to 6 months to make finished compost. A well-cared for compost pile has a clean, fresh earth fragrance and need not cause any turned-up noses.

How to Build a Compost Pile

Pick a 4x6 foot spot in the garden that is somewhat secluded. Put a 6 to 12 inch layer of waste material on the ground. Over this layer scatter several handfuls of bloodmeal or cottonseed meal mixed with bonemeal. This hurries the process of decay and forms a richer compost. On top of this area, sprinkle a 1 to 2 inch layer of ordinary topsoil.

Keep adding layers until the pile is 3 to 4 feet high. The pile can be enclosed on 2 or 3 sides by an open mesh fence.

Keep your compost pile damp but not too wet and turn once a week to speed up the process.

Materials to Use in Making Compost

You can use grass clippings, leaves, weeds, sod, fall garden waste, shredded newsprint, kitchen vegetable waste, tree trimmings, animal manure (except dog, cat or horse). Be sure that anything you throw into your compost pile is not diseased. You may also add sawdust, hay, and straw.

Speeding Up the Composting Process

Grind or shred all materials to be composted. Turn the pile once a week until it is done. Keep the pile moist. Raise the pile off the ground on a screen for better aeration. Mix 1/2 bottle of beer per 5 bushels of materials into your pile.
