In 1798, John Cullison was listed on the census as John Culastick, a single
man who lived in the same area as Shadrach, Josias Jr., Jeremiah and Willian
Culaston (Culiston). After the death of his father in 1810, he was still
single, but was responsible for his Mother and sister, both named Elizabeth.
John Cullison was a literate man or he would not have been able to become
a Hethodist Minister. Rev John Cullison was received on trial into the
Conference of the M.E. Church about 1795, remained on trial until 1798 and
was received in full connection with the Hethodist Church in 1799. He was
ordained deacon in 1799 and elder in 1801. He was a circuit riding preacher
earning $80 a year when he could get it. His circuit or assigned territory,
could take two to four weeks or as long as six weeks to cover. In 1796, he
served the Winchester, VA area. In 1798, all of Calvert Co. was included in
the area he served. Allegheny Circuit with varying bounds in PA, MD and
present day WV, was his assignment in 1799. John was assigned to the Ohio
circuit which was in present day wV in 1800. The Federal Circuit between
Baltimore and DC was his circuit in 1801. He was assigned the Erie Circuit,
in Northern PA in 1802. In 1803 his assignment was the W. Wheeling Circuit
which covered VA and OH.
In 1804 he was 'located', meaning he no longer served as a traveling preacher.
He performed a marriage between James Cullison and Sarah Cullison in Maryland
in January 1808. He was still in MD in 1816 when he officiated at the marriage
of Abraham Busby and Deborah Kemp near Ellicott City.
John was named as executor of his father's will, written 1797, recorded in
1809. He married Nancy Towson, 28 Dec 1811 Baltimore Co., MD
By 1820 John and Nancy Cullison had moved to Perry Township, Coshocton Co.,
OH, where he farmed and served as a Methodist minister at Goshen Church of God
at Cullison Ridge. At that tine, John and Nancy's family consisted of two boys
and two girls, all under 1O years of age. By 1830, John was between 60 and 70
years old, while Nancy was 40-50 and their family had grown to include eight
children. There were two sons aged 15-20, two daughters aged 10-15, two
daughters and one son aged 5-1O and one daughter under 5 years of age.
John Cullison wrote his will on 4 Feb 1839 and it was recorded on 18 Apr 1845
in Coshocton Co., OH. In his will he mentioned only his wife Nancy and eldest
son Jacob. The executor was his wife Nancy and the witnesses were James L.
HcGregor and Beal Adams. John Cullison died 11 Jan 1845 aged 75 years 11 days,
and was buried in the Goshen Church of God Cemetery, Perry Twp., Coshocton
Co.,OH.
John would have made it a lot easier for Cullison Family researchers if he had
listed all his children's names in his will. Since he did not, we can only use
a process of elimination and some educated guesses as to the eases of his other
children.
I believe this John Cullison was also the father of Comfort Cullison who
married William Ogle. The 1840 census the following individuals consecutively
indicating for Virginia township, Coshocton Co., Ohio, lists
that they lived in close proximity.
John Cullison, and wife both 60-70, with one male (11-15 and females: one
(10-15), one (15-20), and one (20-30).
James Cullison, and wife both 20-30 with two males (-5).
Jacob Cullison, and wife both 20-30 with one male (-5) and one female (-5).
William Ogle and wife both (40-50) with two males (10-15), one (15-20),
two (20-30).
