The earliest evidence of William Cullison being in Baltimore Co. is in The
Bordley Papers at the Maryland Historical Society which list a Willian Cullison,
who in 1760, owed the clerk of the court of Baltimore Co. twenty lbs. to cover a
'list of fees arising in 1759'.
No further traces of William Cullison are found until in 1779, Willian
Coloston, along with his sons. Joseph, Joshua and Jeremiah were non-jurors to
the Oath of Fidelity which meant they would not swear, but only affirm their
loyalty. This was recorded in the Baltimore Minutes of the Court 1772-1781.
In 1783 there was a Direct Tax Assessment in Baltimore Co. and William
Cultlison, living in the area Middle River Hundred/Back River Hundred had four
horses, eight cattle and a total of twelve white Inhabitants in his household.
At the same time, William Cullison owned 38 1/2 acres, part of the larger
tract 'Sportsmans Hall' in North Hundred but was not living on the property.
William Cullison was involved in a number of land transactions. On 17 NOV 1783,
William Cullison, Farmer, paid 65 lbs. current money to William Francis,
carpenter, of Baltimore Co., and received the deed to a tract named 'Point
Lookout' which was near Pipe Creek in Carroll Co. In 1785, on the ninth of
September, William and Jesse Cullenson, later referred to as Cullison) together
signed a bond to purchase confiscated British land in the state of Maryland.
Each man owed 17 lbs., with the interest payable at the end of every year and
the entire amount due on 1 JAN 1790. William and Jesse Cullison signed with
their marks and the document was witnessed by Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer
and recorded on 13 SEP 1788. Finding this document was extremely important
because it established that there was a close relationship between Jesse and
William Cullison.
While William Cullison was a farmer he knew how to turn a profit on real
estate. On 24 NOV 1787, he sold the tract now called 'Point Look In' for 171
lbs. to David and Solomon Louderslagle, sons of Martin Louderslagle.
On 5 MAR 1787, John Osborn conveyed to William Cullison, 37 acres, part of
a tract named 'Sportsmans Hall' John Osborn had registered 'Sportsmans Hall
Resurvey' in Apirl 1769.
The 1790 Census for Baltimore Co., Maryland, reveals that William Culaston was
listed with two free white males age 16 and up, three free white males under age
16, and four free white females.
In 1796, a Certificate and a Patent was issued to William Cullisson for 115 1/2
acres, on a tract called 'Tuckers Range'. Part of this tract, 19 3/4 acres,
was conveyed to Edmund Edwards in 1797 for 40 lbs. Edmund was probably a
grandson, son of William and Elizabeth's deceased daughter, Mary, and Aaron
Edwards. Elizabeth, wife of William, was examined privately and said she
agreed to the sale.
Another tax in 1798 was called The Particular Tax Assessment for Baltimore and
Carroll Counties and sheds some more light on living conditions of the time. At
that time, William Cullason lived on a tract of 124 acres called 'Sportsmans
Hall'. His log dwelling house was one story and sixteen feet square. Imagine his
large family living in this house!
Although William Cullison wrote his will and it was witnessed on 13 OCT 1797,
he did not die until 1809. His will was registered and went to probate on
19 APR 1809. William named his wife Elizabeth; his sons Jeremiah, John,
Elijah, Abraham, William, Joshua, Joseph, and James and his daughters Ann Cole,
Teresia Chisholm, Elizabeth Cullison, and Mary Edwards. He mentioned the tract
'Sportseans Hall' and named his son John Cullison as Executor. Witnesses to the
will were Tobias Stanebury, Nathaniel Watts and Shadrach Cullison, who was
his nephew.
There are other Land Patents at the Maryland Hall of Records in Annapolis with
the Cullison name but no explanation of how they connect to the Cullison family.
In 1782, 'Cullison's Right', a tract of 535 acres, was surveyed for John Lemmon
and Certificate # 386 was issued. In 1793, 'Cullison's Old Aim', a tract of 1Q9
acres was patented by Thomas Miller and this was recorded. Then in 1811, a
tract of 32 acres called 'Cullison's Neglect', and a tract of 2 1/4 acres
called 'Cullison's Vexation', were patented by Melcah Fauble (Meichoir Fowble).
Some connection to the latter land transaction right be found in the fact that
William's daughter Elizabeth, married Jacob Fowble in 1819.
