You'll notice he has his "I love Grandma" cap on, as any well brought up Southern boy should. The tune playing in the background, in case you don't know it, is "I Just Can't Wait to Be King", from Disney's "Lion King". As far as I'm concerned though, he doesn't have to wait, he already is the King.
His name is Dennis and he is my late husband's namesake. I was priviledged to be present at his birth...something I never consciously experienced with my own children.I want so much for this little boy, but I will be happy if I can just help to instill in him some values to live by. My wish is that he will be CARING, RESPONSIBLE and RESPECTFUL - not because it would be wrong not to be, but because being that way will bring him more happiness in life than all the riches he could amass. I hope that I can help to give him the self-confidence that I lacked as a youngster. I can then rest assured that he will not miss out on an opportunity that may come his way, because he was afraid to fail. He must know that failure is as much a part of life as success and along this road we all meet both many times.
I had a wonderful grandmother who always had time to read to me, and baked wonderful things and smelled of apple pie spice and woodsmoke. I have no doubts that she loved me with that unconditional kind of love. Whenever I think about being a grandmother, I think about her and send up a little prayer to thank her for all those times she put aside her own tasks to be with me. And I guess, I selfishly want Denny to be able to think of me always with those same kind of loving thoughts. And so, we cook together, and build barns with Leggo blocks. We read, read, read, and play lots of "pretend games". We pull each other in the red wagon and make a game of all our chores. I hope that I will always have time for my little grandson and that he will use the love I'm giving him to make himself into one of those sought-after people. You know the kind... the one who draws people like a magnet because they have proven their value through thoughts, words, and actions.
If you are a grandparent then I hope you know what I'm talking about. If you don't know then make some changes in your life because you're letting one of the pleasures of advancing age pass you by.
