Wife’s Notes...
--------------------------------------------------
Notes:
Jane, as she was called, did not have any education.  She was next to the oldest in a large family so she had to do a lot of work for the family.  The oldest child, Caroline, was an invalid and died in her middle teens.  In those days, people had to make nearly everything they used.  When her husband died, she lived with her youngest son John who taught her to read but she never did learn to write.

Excerpt from letter from John K. Elliott dated 17 Aug 1968: "When I, with my parents, was visiting in Illinois, I thought the Cooke family were queer people, because they were all at sword-points with each other.  I was young at that time, but I was quite observant and took in the situation, which I clearly remember, perhaps because I've written it many times.  We went first to Bill Cooke's as he was called.  He was located in Flora, Ill.  He owned and operated a flouring mill in that town.  He did custom grinding so the mill stood idle most of the time.  We learned while there that Bill Cooke would have nothing to do with any of his relatives.  He could not, or would not, tell us where to find any of them.  We got information from other sources.  I think we visited Holl Cooke next.  He lived In Xenia and worked at the carpenter trade.  There were quite a family all at home.  We found Uncle Holl in the same mood as that of his brother Bill.  Apparently, he had washed his hands of all members of the Cooke family.  We next visited Mill Shoals, where three of my mother's sisters lived, within a stone's throw of each other, but none of them were on speaking terms.  My mother visited with all of them, but if anyone knew what the trouble was, she never learned about it."
