Newton Cook - Newton was one of 3 Cooks with the 9th. Kentucky (1860 Census Harrison County,KY)
Newton Cook Residence not listed; Enlisted on 10/21/61 at Abingdon, VA as a Private. On 10/21/61 he mustered into "D" Co. KY 9th Infantry. He died of disease on 8/15/64 at Forsyth, GA. He was listed as: Wounded 9/20/63 Chickamauga, GA Sources: Confederate Kentucky Volunteers War 1861-65

from his preface, The author quotes the editor of the Cynthiana News, "No place in Kentucky attracted so much attention and so much interest, during the war from both parties, as out little "city of the maidens." No sooner than the telegraph communicated the news of an invasion of Kentucky either from the direction of the Ohio, or the Cumberland, than the minds were directed at Cynthiana." Some 1400 men marched off to war from Harrison County, Kentucky.
Cynthiana which is the county seat for Harrison County is on the Licking River and about 30 miles morth of Lexington and 65 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio.
In Chapter 8 (entitled Keller's Bridge) the author describes an engagement which occurred on June 11, 1864. Catherine and Cyrus Cook lived with their 4 children near the surrender site. Cyrus was a millwright and was building the A. Keller distillery. The Confederates used the Cook home as a hospital after the battle. Cora Virginia Cook was only nine years old when she witnessed the bloodshed. The Cook's and their neighbors buried the dead on the hilltop that evening. This is a wonderful account of the war and it's role in Harrison County.
