Before coming to Calloway County, he hired out to do farm work and in the 1900 Stewart Co. Census, lived in the household of his uncle, James Jefferson Cook. On Dec. 22, 1917, he was married to Suella Evans at Pine Bluff by Bro. Ed Outland, Suella b 6-27-1899, d 5-16-1987 in Murray where they had lived since the early forties, she was the daughter of Charles F. and Lucy Caroline Pittman Evans of the Boatwright community. Both are buried at Barnett Cemetery. In the days when families and neighbors lived quite far apart, square dance play parties (musicals) and pea shelling gatherings were an opportunity to visit and have fun.
