NINTH GENERATION

272. Dr. John Rodman was born in 1653. He owned 47 acres about Dec 22 1679 in Christ Church Parish, Barbados Island. He resided in 1716 in Flushing, Long Island. This was at the time of his daughter's (Hannah's) marriage to Jonathan Dickenson. He died on Jul 10 1731 in Flushing, Long Island. 1679 Dec. 22 John Rodman, son of John & Elizabeth Rodman, appeared, in Hotten's list's (p. 484) as the owner of 47 acres and 13 negroes in Christ Church Parish, Barbados Island.

1682 John & Mary Rodman moved to Newport, Rhode Island, following his brother's move, with their son, John (age 3), and daughter, Mary (age 1).

1684 May 6 Dr. John Rodman (son of John & Elizabeth Rodman) was admitted a freeman of Newport, Rhode Island. In this year he purchased a large tract of land on Block Island (off the coast and part of Rhode Island).

1686 April Dr. John Rodman (son of John & Elizabeth Rodman) purchased approximately 1000 acres in Burlington county, New Jersey, as follows: On April 8 he purchased 492 acres from James Budd and on April 14 he purchased 500 acres from William Biddle.

1688 Dr. John Rodman moved to Block Island.

1690 The entire colony of Rhode Island had a population of about 3500.

April 7 Dr. John Rodman was admitted a freeman of Block Island.

July A French fleet entered the harbor at Block Island and plundered the inhabitants. Dr. John Rodman interceded when one insulted his wife, offering his life for her honor. - "Genealogy of the Rodman Family" citing "History of Block Island" by Rev. S.T. Livermore. (Verified in copy of latter.)

Summer A French privateer landed and took prisoners, including Dr. John Rodman. At his home, Dr. Rodman was released with his wife and children, but refused to leave while any woman or child remained there. Though threatened, he defied the privateers who finally released all the prisoners, then left the island with their plunder. - "Genealogy of the Rodman Family" by Charles Henry Jones citing "Memoir of William Rodman".

"One of the first privateers commissioned [ by New Jersey], Captain Thomas Paine of Jamestown, was instrumental in driving off French ships that had landed on Block Island and terrorized its people in 1690." - "Rhode Island", 1986, William G. McLoughlin.

1691 Dr. John Rodman moved from Block Island to Flushing, Long Island.
On June 4, 1691, John Rodman of Block Island conveyed to John Adams of Flushing, in exchange for land and houses there, 475 acres near Rancocus Creek, Burl. Co., N.J., and 25 acres of meadow some distance from the house. (WJD B, Part 2:484)

1695 "At a Generall Yearly meeting att ye house of Walter Newberrys in Rhoad Island ye:14th:daye of ye:4th mo: 1695----It is also Agreed yt ye meeting at Longe Island shall Bee From this time a Yearely meeting and yt John Bowne & John Rodman Shall take Ceare to Receive all Such papers as Shall Come to ye yearly meeting in Long Island & Correspond with Friends Appoynted in London." - Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Volume 3, page 11.

1698 Dr. John Rodman was recorded as a resident of Flushing, Long Island, with his wife Mary, nine children, and 11 negro servants.

July 26 Dr. John Rodman, a "Chirurgeon", was admitted a freeman of the city of New York. He resided in the city "a few years". He owned land, "Rodman's Slip" (so named for more than a century and listed as such on old city maps), at the foot of John street, on the East river front. By 1886, that name had been changed to "Burling's Slip."

1702 Dr. John Rodman returned to Flushing, Long Island.

pre-1710 Thomas and John Rodman shared the bequest of the main Barbados Island plantation at their mother Elizabeth's death.

1716 Dr. John Rodman was living in Flushing, Long Island, at the time of his daughter's (Hannah) marriage.

1731 July 10 Dr. John Rodman (age 78) died at Flushing, Long Island.

1748 Feb. 24 Mary Scammon Rodman (age 85), widow of Dr. John Rodman, died at Flushing, Long Island.

1751 April 12 Scammon Rodman, for Dr. John Rodman's estate, offered more than 700 acres on Block Island, with house and livestock, for rent along with 3/16 of the undivided portion of the island.

He was married to Mary Scammon before 1679 in Barbados Island.

273. Mary Scammon was born in 1663. She died on Feb 24 1748 in Flushing, Long Island. Children were:

child ii. Mary Rodman was born on Jul 5 1681 in Barbados Island. She died on Feb 7 1683 in Newport, Rhode Island. Died at less than age 2.
child iii. Samuel Rodman was born on Aug 6 1683 in Newport, Rhode Island. He died on May 1 1720 in New York, New York.
child iv. Joseph Rodman was born on Apr 11 1685 in Newport, Rhode Island. He died in Sep 1759. He resided in New Rochelle, Westchester Co., New York. "By his first wife he had ten children."
child v. William Rodman was born on May 20 1687 in Newport, Rhode Island. He died on May 23 1704.
child vi. Anne Rodman was born on Aug 11 1689 in Block Island, Rhode Island. She died in 1715 in Boston, Massachusetts.
child vii. Thomas Rodman was born in Feb 1692 in Flushing, Long Island. He died in Oct 1693. (Died at age 1.)
child viii. Mary Rodman was born on Dec 20 1693 in Flushing, Long Island. Second Mary, following death of first Mary Rodman (sibling).
child ix. Elizabeth Rodman was born on Jan 24 1696 in Flushing, Long Island. She died in Oct 1701. Died in infancy. A year later, another daughter was named Elizabeth.
child x. Thomas Rodman was born on Jan 9 1698. He resided in 1746 in Flushing, Long Island. This was at the time of his daughter Ann's marriage to Caleb Field. He died after 1746. Second Thomas of this family, following death of first Thomas Rodman (sibling).
child xi. Hannah Rodman was born on Aug 6 1700 in New York, New York. She died after 1737.
child xii. Elizabeth Rodman was born on Mar 7 1702 in Flushing, Long Island. She died on Dec 22 1724 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Second daughter of same name.
