Home is where the heart is...and the heart of our home is the Kitchen!
I guess that's the way it is in most country homes, the kitchen is the "Gathering Place". There's always that homey feelin' when you step into that room. The wonderful smells to be found of spices and something bakin' in the oven can just overwhelm you. The memories that have been made, and that are waiting to be made there, will linger in your mind forever!
Our kitchen is where everyone gangs up when they're here to visit. It's where our parties are thrown, our family dinners are enjoyed, where we sit and plan our futures, where we sit and visit, where we cry with each other, where the music is played, where songs are sang, where laughter abounds, and where dreams are made!
I still remember walkin' home from school when I was a kid on snowy winter days (No, it wasn't 10 miles and I wasn't barefoot)
to come into my folks house and Mama would have hot chocolate and fresh baked cookies waitin' on me! That's the kind of warm lovin' atomosphere that I wanted to have in my home. A place that you just can't wait to get home to!!!
When we have parties at our home, everyone gangs up in the kitchen. The guys are all gathered around the kitchen table with their guitars and various instruments, playin' music til the wee hours of the mornin'! The cabinets are all lined with snacks and there's usually a big pot of beans, stew or chili on the stove. We pull chairs up from where ever you can get one and the bar is lined with all the ladies just talkin', laughin' and singin' to beat the band!
Christmas and Thanksgivings around here are the same way! There is usually food runnin' out your ears and lots of family and friends. Of course after the dinner is over, the dishes are put away and a short nap (if you're lucky), it's back to gettin' the guitars out and music begins again!
I remember when we first bought this big ol' house here in town, it wasn't in the best of shape...we had lots of work to do on it.
My best friend Robin and myself got into a pepsi and water fight with all the kids....the next thing you know, we're all runnin' across the livin' room and belly-slidin' across the kitchen floor! We had a big mess!!! A couple of my nephews and my daughter Shauna will always remember that night and the night I got into the spaghetti fight with them in that kitchen also! They still can't believe that I let that happen in the house! Of course, now that the house is fixed up...that WILL NOT happen again! *S* That's the good kind of kitchen memories!
I hope that everyone takes a little time to just sit and visit in their kitchen! Have a good long carin' talk with your spouse, kids, friends, parents, grandbabies, friend or neighbors in your kitchen. Let your kids or grandbabies help you make some cookies or a cake....let em' get their hands right in the big middle of it all!!! Make a mess...it'll clean up! *S* Enjoy all of that special time in there. It's probably the only room in the house where I can have everyone's undivided attention without distractions!
