1st Battalion Infantry
This battaion origally consisted of two companies, organized from the re-enlisted veterens, stay-over men, and recruits of the First Regiment Minnesota Infantry Volunteers. It was originally commanded by Col. Mark W. Downie of Stillwater, MN. Ordered to Washington D.C. May, 1864; joined the army of the Potomac June 10, 1864. Participated in the following engagements. Petersburg, Va. June 18, 1864. Jerusalem Plank Road, Ba., August 25, 1864; Hatchers Run, Va, July 27, 1864; Company C. joined March 27, 1865. Took active part in campaing commencing March 28, 1865. resuslting in the capture of Petersburg, Va. April 2, 1865. Four new companies joined at Berksville, Va., in April, 1865. Marched from Berksville, Va., to Washington D.C. in May, 1865.
Two new companies joined at Washington; ordered to Louisville, Ky., in June, 1865. mustered out a Jeffersonvile. Ind., July 14, 1865, and discharged at Fort Snelling, MN July 25, 1865
